So first a little background before i ask my question. Today i was at a cat shop seeing about getting a minor repair done and got talking to the tech there. He says that instead of rebuilding my MX13 at 1 million or buying a new truck like i was planning i should swap to a either a new or remanned 3406E. Then claimed by doing so i would be able to ditch my emissions system entirely and could do so legally because i have a 2017 truck.

I was under the assumption that if you bought an emissions truck it had to STAY an emissions truck to be legal. No swapping to an older pre emissions engine. Is this true? Or can i actully put a real engine in my bullforg here in a couple years and ditch the toy one i have now? And if so what would be a good price? he was saying 80k installed but i have no idea if thats a good price or not.

Sorry if this is a dumb question. Just hopeful i can take my trucks balls out of the EPAs purse and keep my 579 which i am actully growing very fond of MX13 or no.

My understanding, no its NOT legal. The truck was not ordered as a glider and must have emissions system current to the trucks year. Thats all according to the EPA rules. Don't think the DOT could care less.

80k for a new motor and swap it in, yowza, seems like a lot but I'd guess a factory reman crate engine is around 50k plus you wouldn't have a core. And it would definitely take some work to make a cat work in place of that MX.

If you really wanted to do it I would buy a used engine and have it rebuilt somewhere else.

Better yet I think if you like the truck when it comes time for a rebuild find someone that can rebuild it and make a few extra parts "fall off" that mx.

    Just my understanding and estimation

Yup thats why im so confused that an actual dealer is telling me its legal and doable, i thought they got fined into the dirt for doing that kinda thing. Some fly by night place and i would just disregard it as a dumb tech and forget about it. But from an actual cat dealer.....it has a little more weight. So i am wondering if i missed something.

As for the engine cost, that also comes with the same warranty as a new engine according to the dealer which helps offset the cost a bit. Still cheaper and easier then buying a new truck and then getting it setup. As to having parts falling off the MX....well im tempted but that is a REALLY big fine. If i cant get a cat in my 579 i was going to just replace it when i pay it off and get a brand new one speced exactly how i want if a rebuild is over 25K. Everyone i know says MX engines arent worth rebuilding though which is why the idea of a cat engine is so appealing. For half the price of a new rig i could get a bulletproof engine, transmission and rear end rebuild and have likely one of the best 579s on the road as a result.

Of course that assumes bozo doesnt do something to make that type of truck setup illegal.

Putting a E model in that or having parts fall of that MX, there is no difference as far as EPA rules, both illegal. Again my very non lawyer, professional anything opinion. Would I still do it, very possibly

The chassis must stay at the current emission level if equipped from the factory.

Why do think your MX needs rebuilt? Just cuz its at a million?

Its only at 600k atm. Mostly im prepareing for a rebuild and expecting it at 1 millionish as that seems to be around when most MX engines tend to start to fail according to what i can find. My main concern is that even though my trucks oil, blowby and dyno came up as healthy before i bought it. Ive found a lot of indications of poor maintaince by whoever owned it before me. I.E difs with sludge instead of oil and very low amd dirty transmission fluid for example.

So figure i will just plan for a major rebuild around when my warranty expires. Much easier to plan for a fix and not need it then to need it and scramble for the funds.

Have some fleets 2015s with 950k with no major work and still going strong. If taken care of they will go the distance.

True but thats why the signs of poor maintaince prior to my purchase have me worried. Ah well i guess ill cross that bridge when we get there.

Rather do that than be bound to new emissions bs. I left my 2013 engine on the shop floor!
