I have a 1993 Freightliner with a Cat 3406B motor. A couple of the exhaust bolts have broken off and they are on the top row. One is closest to the firewall and the other is on the far side of the motor, also on top. On this motor the top row is not studs but bolts or at least the studs don't go very far.

If I removed the exhaust manifold, whats left of the bolt would be flush with the block. Since I can't weld anything to the top of the stud/bolt, can I just leave the manifold on and try and drill them out?

    Thanks

They should be studs. If the bolts are broke then the gaskets are bad as well. I would pull it get a stud kit from CAT and 6 gaskets

That is what I would do.
Drill and tap....but pull the whole exhaust manifold as well, and new gaskets.

I must caution that's requiring a particular touch. Easy tight1/16th turn back off remove shaving, back in you go towards 1/4 turn eventually you cut your first thread circle with a certain amount of spirals to go.

Ive got a full tap and drill kit under the shelf. It's as clean as the day they forged it.

Used to be a couple of bits you can get that will bite into the busted bolt in the hole and if you got a big enough drill spin it right out of there.

My brother broke bolts all the time on his van once. He only needed 3 to fix problem bolts and ended up making 3 more 10 mile trips to buy 12 more for his vehicle. I keep telling him to get the whole box and keep a few. Oh no too expensive. Hes a big boy.. snap. *&%$

back on the road we go... gas at 3.00 then...

Trust me, make life easier on yourself and pull the manifold. Don't forget to order the turbo oil line o-rings/gaskets and the turbo exhaust gaskets, studs and nuts too in case the turbo has to come off the manifold.

Pretty much. Just a bare block with cam bearings in it. Next time I get out to the truck I'll be taking it in to get hot tanked and some machining done on the block deck to clean it up.

    Oxbow Thanks this.

You can take the manifold off and build the bolt up with a mig welder, when you get enough weld a nut to it

    Hulld Thanks this.
