Looking at an 1995 IH 9200 with the 350hp 3176b engine in it. Just wanted to know what it’s ideal cruising rpm is with fuel economy in mind? I know from the trucks build sheet that it’s max torque is at 1800rpm and it’s governed out at 2000. Truck has an 8LL trans with a .74 final gear ratio and a 3.91 gear which due to their nature has had me crunching numbers.
Also what is your general opinion on the 3176b? I don’t know much about them and google searches only can tell me so much. Edit: Can they be safely turned up closer to 400hp? Edit II: currently has 3.91 gear, .74 final gear, tire size is 22.5

I do not recall a 3176b. I due recall 3176 Cats in road tractors. To me they would be better in vocational type straight trucks and they did awesome in 2505 Terragators.
Drivers pulling tanks complained about them on torque. Said a slight upgrade at a traffic light it would not take off in second. Had to start in low ( 9 or 10 speed ) but in a hurry because oncoming traffic could get a green light before the center of the intersection was made while turning left. Rev high and shift fast. The slosh in a straight barrel tank would hit then and choke it out in the middle of the intersection.
I doubt anyone can answer your RPM and fuel economy question with your gearing and no tire size. Past discussions on the best mileage is slower is normally better. Rolling hills change things a bit.
They don't like excessive RPM as the push rods go to places they do not belong.Cdubb Thanks this. -
Thanks BoxCar,
From my understanding and if my source is good, they are basically an older version of the C12 engine. They had the original 3176 then a B and C model before switching to the C12 name, there might have been a D model too but I can’t seem to locate that so it may not exist or was a super early C12.
