I've found minimal helpful information regarding cat 3046 engines. I'm looking at a marmon to restore and just assumed the 3046 part was a typo tell I did some googling. Does anyone have any good information or sites to find good information? The engine is bad and from what I can see online they aren't exactly easy to find and are very lacking in power. Would you buy a truck with this engine? The truck would be a restoration.

If you search on this site (3406B) you should get plenty of results.Caterpillar Cowboy, BoxCarKidd, spsauerland and 1 other person Thank this. -
See I assumed it was a 3406b. The ad on the guys website and on truck paper both say 3046. Would it be safe to assume it's a typo then? I haven't had a chance to call him yet.
Oxbow Thanks this. -

I called the guy. It's definitely a 3406b. He's saying it would take 50 to 60 thousand to restore. Which seems excessive to me. I can do a lot of the work myself. Brakes and tires and a lot of stuff.

Might want to find out where truck is located, looks like one that was on Craigslist in va or wv a while back for $3500

It's in Oklahoma. He said he's had it for 7 years which seems off to me. I didn't think to ask about title status. I suppose a cashier's check is probably a safe way to buy something. I've always used cash on vehicles so I'm not sure to be honest

$50k would do a hell of a nice resto but if you did most of the work yourself I bet you could do it for $30k.

I can do brakes and tires and a lot of the other work myself. He said it needed 10 new wheels which is weird. I've never heard of wheels going bad. Maybe he meant that they didn't look good anymore. Have you ever heard of wheels going bad? About the only thing I can't do myself is motor and transmission work. He said it has a lot of blow by and could leak a gallon of oil in an hour. So I figured I'd end up putting a motor in and whole I'm at it check out the transmission and axles. I'd like convert it to a newer style of air ride. From what I've seen peterbilts air ride with air bags on the steer axle and such is supposed to be nice. I like the way my 2005 379 rides.
