i am operating a truck with an unreliable fuel gauge and no cross over between tanks.

is it safe to keep a used diesel fuel canister in the storage box?

I wouldn't. I'm a reefer driver and made an extension spout for the reefer tank so the freaking fuel wouldn't shoot out or the pump cut off on old tanks where the fuel opening is the same size as the fuel pump nozzle. After using it even when I put it in a zip lock back in the storage area the fumes would give me a headache. I see some owners strap containers on their catwalk though. My fuel gauge messes up a lot and it reached a point where I know how far I can go before I need to fuel without using the fuel guage.

No, it isn't. Get a tank dip gauge and measure them at every stop. Then get it fixed.

Correct me if I'm wrong but... Isn't a working fuel gauge a DOT requirement?

How is DOT. going to know that unless you tell them?

I can remember the fuel gauge not being very accurate. We would dip each tank

    Otherwise known as a stick.

You don't want to ever run the tank dry. I don't know how a extra fuel container would help much because you wouldn't know you needed it until the truck died.

You should be able to know by mileage when you need fuel, just allow yourself enough that you never run out. I'd just get the gauge fixed though.

Probably when you tell them the reason you are hauling all those containers of diesel.

I forgot about those.Thing I would do is get fuel every like 400 miles. It wouldn't be too peachy running out of fuel while climbing a mountain or hill.
