I am new at this forum site and didn't see any where else to put this question regarding refrigerated trailers. At least we pull them with our trucks, hence the 18 wheeler term.
Anyways on with my question. I have pulled flatbed and vans but recently I have decided to purchase a Refer trailer and go out on my own.
Does any one have any pro and cons as to which of the two refer units I might consider. Carrier or Thermoking? I only ask about these brands because they are more predominant in the trailer industry. Thanks for any helpful comments.
Carrier vs Thermoking Refrigeration

IMHO--the question is much too vague--If you are talking brand new/right now/it IS a toss up--carriers come a long way and there are some (almost insane)incentives on the market at this time. If you are talking used--now it gets very interesting--how old? what kind? Most importantly what type of trailer is it in--who owned it? Hours(on/and run) what was it used for?
What are YOU going to do with it? Where are YOU going to run?
Not trying to be a jerk--but this IS NOT a yes/no answer(if you are serious)--what i think you are getting overall is perception--many today prefer TK because (on the average)they are quieter--on the reality side there are many more TK service facilities than carrier--BUT--they really all work on both--and believe me you haven't seen repair bills until you have gotten into refrigeration repair!
But if you are serious--and have some specific questions--I'll be HAPPY to try to help--either post them--or PM me!
I wish you all the success in the world in your endeavor!
Just my$.02
(BTW--I am 3d generation O/O--produce--reefer hauler--and the 4th gen has been out here for almost 10 years--and the 5th(my grandson) is out by the barn sleepin (or playin)in Grampa's truck as I write this!Last edited by a moderator: Feb 20, 2011

'olhand Thanks this. -
I'd prefere thermoking. less problems with wiring

Had both tk and carrier and prefer the carrier my carrier runs quiet uses hardly any fuel and doesnt shake the truck like a tk just my two cents.
Bullittman Thanks this. -
IMO,,,, older unit go TK / newer unit go carrier. Dittos on the carrier has come along way!
Just talk ive heard from salesmen at various trailer mfgs.makterna, The Challenger and Bullittman Thank this. -
I thank you for the comments and advice. As luck would have it, I found a 2004 Utility with a ThermoKing unit that had been repo'd. The TK unit has 6900 actuall hours on it. I made an offer of 15K and the bank agreed. I have to put new tires on the trailer and fix a busted hinge but thats about it. I will have the TK serviced just to be sure before I load it. I will be hauling frozen food out of Idaho to various western states. I'm not worrying about the California law concerning the 7 year limit on refer. motors for now!!! IMO...California is a Communist Country rather than a part of the United States. No offense to Californians.
