So where does a new entrant get their miles from? From my understanding if this isn't updated it will hurt my BASIC scores. Can't be having that nonsense with a one truck show.

Add up your IFTA miles for the year.

This got me thinking too, as I've never done it yet and it is over 1.5 year already....I did some reading on FMCSA site and from what I could understand, it is done on MCS-150 biennial report, which is to be updated every 2 years. The due dates are determined based on the US DOT number. My due date is not there yet.
Updating Your Registration or Authority
I read there that filing it every two years is the minimum requirement but you can do it more often, any time.
As for a new entrant, I don't think there is a requirement to enter miles, until the first biennial report is due, or at least the first full year has been covered. This is the first time I'll report my VMT too - for 2017. If I am wrong, I hope someone will jump on this to correct me.DSK333 Thanks this. -
I did mine in January, thinking I'd be good to go for my once every 2 years. But apparently, they want it to be done on a specific month on an even or odd numbered year. Super easy to do, though. If you don't remember to file, you'll probably get a ton of spam mail from people trying to squeeze money out of you, which should remind you to do it.

IIRC I started new entrant program in 2015. I had to update my stuff in 2016. Can not remember if it was before it after 12 months but I do know it was before I passed the program. So far I have not heard anything about updating it, may have to look in to it.

Last number of dot number = month it must be updated during. 1=January 0=October.
2nd last number of your dot number if even, file in even years. Odd if odd. Whatever your filing year is, file the previous years total mileage.
For a new carrier, (when I did it at least) we were supposed to estimate mileage, and report that. Same for irp before it changed to frp. It makes more sense how they do that now.
I would just take an estimated guess and enter that. And don't forget to update it when you're supposed to. If you forget they will deactivate your dot number.DSK333 Thanks this. -
Done! Entered my 2017 IFTA miles. It took me 10 minutes (5 of each was to find the PIN in my files). I checked the Safer and it did not show the update right away. I guess, it has to be a few days before it appears there.
So bureaucracy items to remember are as follow:
1. HVUT - - every year --- deadline by the end of August
2. UCR - every year
3. IRP - every year
4. IFTA - every quarter
5. MCS-150 (VMT update) - at least once every two years
...Am I missing anything else?DSK333 Thanks this. -

So I enter the mileage from before I had my authority?

Estimate how many miles you think you will do.
If you're a coast to coast year long you might enter 150,000. If you're running regional area you might enter 100,000. Just take an educated guess. You aren't likely to be questioned about it.
You can update your mcs-150 more often than the minimum required. Just make sure you also do it in the month you're required to as noted above.DSK333 Thanks this.
