Hello,
I would like to ask here where O/O-s are getting their cargo insurances.
I have trouble finding an underwriter for our company.
I could get it from Progressive for 100k, but as I have understood it has to be at least 250k in car hauling business. I have tried many places. Progressive, Geico, OOIDA, NASTEK to name a few, but no luck so far. It is a new company (just over a year and CDL is less than 2 years).
Any advise or thoughts will be appreciated!

Usually as soon as you apply for your MC# your phone rings off the hook. You can always add extra insurance through another company.

I believe that Northland still writes insurance for car haulers. You are correct in that you will likely need at least $250,000 for cargo insurance. If you haul high dollar cars you could be required to have higher coverage. The company that I used to have my insurance when I hauled cars was bought out a number of years ago. I don't recall who bought them. Since you haul cars you probably subscribe to Central Dispatch. Check some of the other car haulers and see who they have their insurance with and give them a call. You could also ask other carhaulers with whom they have their insurance. The time in business will likely have an impact on your rates. Most insurance companies don't want to underwrite insurance on carhaulers due to the high risk.

Thank You for your feedback! IMO, if you are new to business and do not have that required 2 year CDL experience, they are not going to give you more than $100k cargo ins. I tried and called so many places and got declined everywhere. We had to hire a driver with experience (which wasn't the plan, originally) and first place I called we got $300k. Finally, we are ready to roll. I am actually putting together a first load using Central right now. So, wish me luck

Good luck.

I just talked to my agent in Houston this week, and Progressive now will cover cargo to $250,000. From what my agent told me this is a new deal for them, and pretty recent...along with some rate hikes. Im waiting to hear back from an agent for Farmers, that i heard about from another hauler I met at a drop off in Dallas several weeks back, when we were shooting the breeze while waiting to get unloaded. He was paying about $400 per month for a Ford 650 and a 4 car unit, where i was paying $550 for a Dodge 3500 and a 3 car wedge. Now that I have a Kaufman 6 car trailer and Volvo single axle tractor, im getting quotes from around $875 to $1150, depending on how money much i put down. The problem is getting coverage for over 100,000 on your cargo, it gets expensive, adn we all know were not hauling a load of Kleenex.

One drawback to the cargo for carhaulers is that each vehicle is considered a separate deductable. That is usually not a problem, but if you have damage on mor than one vehicle then it could get expensive. One way to reduce your premium would be to raise your deductable. I know some car haulers that have a deductable of as high as $5,000. I think you will find most have at least a $2,500 deductable.

According to my agent my deductable is per incident, not per car. I was worried about getting some new cars hailed on coming back from dallas, and had thought about what that would cost me and called them to make sure.
-
If that is the case, then you are lucky. It has been a number of years since I hauled cars, but that is the way it was at that time. I have a friend who hauls cars and his policy provides for a deductable for each vehicle. You may want to read over your policy just to be certain. Who do you have your insurance with? -
it was with progressive, but im shopping around right now since it lapsed.
