Are there car hauler companies that will lease on Owner Operators without auto haul experience? I am interested in changing from Flatbed to Auto hauling. I have load plenty of military vehicles as well as machinery, vehicles, etc... on Stepdeck and Flatbed.

I have haul cars on a wedge trailer and 1 ton pickup but not on a stinger or double deck trailer. 14 years CDL with no tickets or accidents.

Cars more precious than step deck loads ...try to back up silverado above the hood on high rail trailer .!...but i have seen one guy that was born probably with that skill - he backed up full size pick up from the belly from the first attempt !

I used to have my DOT# and mostly did flatbeds and tried briefly hauling cars with a 3 car wedge trailer and a 1 ton truck. That did not work out because 3 cars is limited. I hate sleeping in a pickup truck. I have moved from east coast back to California so flatbed work in west coast sucks. I even tried container work in CA and that did not work out. I am pulling flatbed now and not generating enough income. Car hauling should be better money. I know that each car from west to eastcoast gets around $900 to $1400. With a 8 car trailer, that should generate $7000 to $8000 one way. Running hard, I should be able to do 1.5 to 2 full loops from west to east and back per month.

As for backing a car up to second level, I have no issues with heights and backing. I did well backing up on a 53" wedge trailer. I have been tarping 8' tarps on flatbeds for over a decade in all conditions so height and climbing is no issues.

Bottom line, I know there is more money in auto hauling than flatbed if I get my own Authority. I do not want to run under my Authority because the overhead cost are too high. This is why I rather lease to a carrier.

All major carriers will require "verifiable" car hauling experience. If you are serious about it get your own authority and haul straight off central dispatch and get "experience", but I wouldn't expect the rates to be what that good...

I found a small outfit that will lease on car hauler with limited experience with auto hauling. I plan to lease purchase a 2010 Cottrell 5309 9 car trailer. Any thoughts on this trailer ?

I know that it is heavy and harder to deal with multiple stops. I plan to do long haul as in 2000+ mile trips so I dont mind taking time to shift load.

The good thing about those high mounts is if you get tired of the car haul game just sell the SOB and put the truck to work somewhere else... Never had one myself, but they seem to hold a decent amount/sized vehicles.
