I'm sure this question has been asked a time or two but I cannot find any major difference between the 379 and 389 Peterbilts. All the research that I've been able to find the only difference between the two that I found was just cosmetic the hood sits a little higher on one. I believe the grill is different between the two and I believe there's a few other things. But I have not found anything major between the two. Like with Harleys the 883 Sportster is a lot smaller than the 1200 Sportster and of course the engines are two different sizes. I just figured that there would be some significance between the two Peterbilts. Am I really missing the boat on this? Any and all insight would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance

You forgot about the single digit difference... Lol
spyder7723 and Hoodoo Voodoo Thank this. -
Pretty much just cosmetic. I think when they went to 389 is when they moved the mirrors to cab mounted as well. Grill and headlights are different

There is a lot really, the basic cab shell didn't change, but a lot of other things did.
The hood is taller to make room for the larger radiator needed for the DFP/SCR systems. Everything about the hood is different (grill, headlights, hinges, fenders, etc.). The frame rails are shorter a few inches and the bigger hood pushes the BBC measurement back a few inches (this makes less room from the back of the sleeper to the end of the frame (which sucks for us car haulers). The lighting is all multiplexed and they added a fuse block under the hood. The wiring is completely different compared to 379's. Steer suspension and all frame brackets are different. Different bumpers (mounting holes are all different). Air tank locations have all changed.
Really there are too many changes to list.Oxbow, Toomanybikes, SAR and 3 others Thank this. -

When I bought mine he said it's now 131" up from 127" to still have room for dpf/scr and also have exhaust come out behind steps not through the right side step like they did in earlier 389 models...
And if you rule out gliders you could say 379 = yellow motor and 389 = red motor...RefMata, Oxbow and Hoodoo Voodoo Thank this. -
The 389 is way better because it's got ten more... well it's got ten more of something, I just can't remember what.
All I know is that before the 389 came along, I was bald and not really popular with the ladies. Now I have a full head of hair and have to refill my Cialis prescription every three days, if you know what I mean.rank, hellpatrol, LandslideRich and 5 others Thank this. -

Exhaust through steps? We have car haulers, we don't need silly steps, we have ladders. Here's a useless fact: 388's replaced short hood 379's, 389's replaced long hood 379's. But, you can order a short hood 389 making it identical to a 388. Why??? We have a mix of them all short 388 hoods, but some trucks are 389 models that are no different.
