Yeah if you make a lease contract with the person but then it gets complicated.

The question is why would you?

Employee already has a one ton pickup truck that would capable to do the various deliveries we would need under the 26,000lbs gcwr. Any thoughts on registering it under a business dot and insurance, while the vehicle is also personally insured?

    To do commerical work?

I don't think my full coverage allows that. It will go bye bye if I was in a racing event or working commerical with my vehicle.

Im not doubting the vehicles light enough to do work, There were times two pallets does not a 18 wheeler need. Toss it into a enterprise Van or pickup and go. Bill the customer.

You might need to take another look at your States regulation. My particular area has discovered a massive revenue source on pickup trucks trying to be class C without the CDL. And they are being hunted now. Usually not have a CDL or have a properly CDL papered, labeled vehicle. Example the reflective strips. And it has to have the DOT number plus fire extinugisher etc etc etc.

I know next to nothing about the little ones, they are fairly common here but again the Law has discovered a nice revenue stream cracking down on this type of trucking because people do not bother to go get the CDL and do the things required of them working intrastate or interstate commercial.

Sure you can do it but then why?

You have to carry full insurance plus cargo insurance plus put the numbers on it, with some sort of documentation to cover it as part of the business use just in case.

The owner can write off the mileage, being an employee, unless you reimburse the costs based on mileage.

Would be easier to use that vehicle as opposed to the business having to buy another power unit for the employee. Just wanted to make sure it was legally possible.

For the insurance part ask your agent. I would think yes.

You the business have the employee sign a contract.
That way you have a business to business relationship.
You should be able to lease his truck for each run you need.
Get a magnetic sign and all is good.
    Good luck.

With all the rules and regulations aside it just doesn't seem like it makes any sense to intertwine your personal and professional liabilities.
