Hey guys!! Just had a question about the permit test for PA drivers, class A CDL permit consist of 3 sections, General knowledge, combinations and air brakes. Roughly 95 questions. I was wondering could I space the permit test out in different segments? Like do the general knowledge one day, pass that and come back and take the air brakes portion ? Until each section is complete ? Any help or tips are greatly appreciated !! Thank you !!

The minute you show up at the DMV you are handed the tests. Sit and start filling them out.

If we did things in parts across the USA, the DMV would get nothing done.

You will be taking the tests on a computer. For any question you are not sure of your answer, skip the question. You may be able to get through a test without the question coming back up....that increases your odds of passing the test.

There is no reason to not try to pass all three. Start with the general knowledge test. Then take the combinations test, as there could be some overlap of general knowledge items on the combination test.

Also, take the air brakes test to get familiar with the questions, and again, skip those questions you are not sure of....you may pass the test, even though you think you may not pass.

At my PennDot license station, the usual waiting time is about 3 hours.....so I would never go there 3 times when I could get it done on one trip.....never.

I’m sorry to say but each and every one of you were wrong...

I didn’t have to take all 3 the same day so to all those out there worried you HAVE to take all 3 the same day.. you don’t have to if the material is a lot for you to take on and you want to just Test on say air brakes today and then say General knowledge next week you can do that.. so these people saying you have to take it all at once..are completely wrong I passed all 3 and didn’t have to take them all the same day..

Secondly there was no line or 3 hour wait at the DMV to take a CDL permit test took me 15 mins tops.. maybe 20.. people aren’t lined up to take the CDL Exam like they are to renew their license.. and there’s usually 7-10 computers at the DMV so for cdl purposes there’s almost never a line not sure where you guys are getting your info from but you all where very wrong but I’m glad I passed currently in school and on my way to my new career! But thank you anyway I hope this information reaches anyone else in my shoes and don’t stress it take your time you’ll be fine! Good luck!

    Not true

You can take the test one section at at time, on different days. but you have to pass general knowledge before you can attempt the other sections

Naw, I am usually not wrong. I may be wrong headed, but that is far as I would go.

False my classmate failed gen knowledge but passed her air brakes and conbonations just has her gen knowledge left. And when I took my test I actually remember it giving me the option to take any of the 3 first so there is no requirement to take the gen knowledge first..

One thing to keep in mind is that by splitting up the three test's you are going to delay and extend your testing eligibility date each time. So depending on how quickly your looking to test for your practicals that can delay you.... Also hazmat can delay you for longer then you would want.
