If you prefer to do your driving at night when otr, will most carriers allow this or is it a requirement you drive during the day? I would rather drive at night due to less traffic, less accidents, if you miss a turn, it’s not that big of a deal, ect.

Of course you can. The real problem is most people think they will prefer night driving until they actually start doing it

I used to love driving at night..... than age caught up with me.... Astigmatisms happened.
I can still drive at night.... just a normal 65mph at night has turned into 58 mph at night... on a clear night.

Most refrigerated freight moves at night.
That's the main reason I preferred refrigerated trucking; lots of night driving and wee hour appointments.
Sleep during the day for the most part.
That's the way my OTR schedule usually worked.

You can probably get a better paying job if you like driving all night. Stuff like overnight air freight and short run reefer load general are overnight run. So they pay more. I think gas tanker trucks general run all night making deliveries.

The key to your question is those letters otr (OVER THE ROAD) as an OTR driver unless you are a small exception you are subject to having to drive AT ANY TIME! In these situations it is CRITICAL you learn and understand your body and your body's sleep cycles and rhythms. AND ADJUST! Otherwise, you are just an incident waiting to happen. It can take YEARS to develop the toughness to drive this way. It has been almost 8 years now since I was last driving OTR. I can still sleep most anywhere by just getting still. This is a subject that will cause great debates. In the last several weeks we just finished a thread about this subject.

I can totally drive at night and love it. Reefer is my favorite for that reason. Many night deliveries. Each load you get will determine how you need to run it, day or night

Sure you can drive at night... I do it ALOT, I actually prefer it over day time driving.

Driving at night has many advantages... Way less traffic, less eye strain due to no sunlight (if you have good night vision), very easy to find parking almost anywhere in the morning, less active construction sites, the list goes on and on.

My preferred driving changes slightly depending on direction of travel. When heading north or east I prefer to start my day an hour or 2 before sunset, so I end my day just before dawn. When heading south or west I prefer so start my day just after sunset, and end a few hours after dawn. Do this completely eliminates having to drive into the blinding light of the sunrise or sunset. And in both instances finding parking is a snap because most solar powered drivers are starting thier day and pulling out about the same time or before I pull into the truck stop.

But it doesnt always work out with deliveries and pickups to drive only at night, so you have to be able to adjust to meet the deamands of any given load.

It is absolutely a big deal if you miss a turn at night. What you don't see beyond the busted street light with NYC city signs at 25 feet high above that post can bite you.

We roll at night. Load and unload by day. Anything else is BS and no point in having the HOS logging that we do.

IF we only did day time strictly with OTR tractors, the pay by miles would be pitiful and not worth the effort and expense.

And you wonder why I blast stupid company suits for enacting dumb policies that hurt everyone trying to make a thousand dollars a week.

Cut that to 500 and make the rest next week. HA the nerve.
