I've been thinking about this lately, it's never happened to me but I've heard of it many times, usually when a officer feels the driver is taking roads to avoid a scale.
Guys claim they get pulled over then the dot tells them to follow them to the nearest scale to weigh them.
Now I cannot find anything that says you need to comply with such a ridiculous request. Honestly, if it were me... I would tell them to fly a kite! Bring the portables to me if you want to weigh me. I'm not one of those guys who hates the dot, I've never had issue with them and only ever gotten 1 ticket which was my fault. I am always nice to them and comply with any requests they have..... but that's only because they aren't asking me to burn my diesel to drive somewhere so they can look for a reason to cost me more money.
I've seen it written to comply with reasonable requests but to me that is not reasonable.
Does anyone have any knowledge of this? Or experienced it? I know it's probably the same old argument about "if you've got nothing to hide" but as I said...... this is just curiousity. I know I've heard guys complain about helping the dot during inspections. Heard of one guy who told the cop to turn the #### signal lights on himself if he wanted to inspect them..... he said he regretted that decision shortly after when he was put out of service and $3000 dollars broker.
Can the dot force you to a scale?

If they could not then everyone would load heavy and run around them.

Yes... At least in Texas, and Trooper can flag you down for inspection and have him follow you to a clearing or state yard nearby. They do it often with the state yard in Decatur at us287 and us380, they flag trucks from either road and have them follow you to the yard for weight and level 3's and 4's.

They don't necessarily take you to a weigh station. Many times it's a grain elevator or some other scale that has been certified by the state. Personally I'd rather take my chances on a flat certified scale than getting weighed on portables on an uneven roadside.

I don't know about other states, but in Texas it's actually a misdemeanor if "You do not comply with the lawful requests of a peace officer".

I would guess most states will have something similar to this in their statutes:

When the tomah scales still existed on 90 in Wisconsin I got caught going around them ...load of potatoes lol....it wasn't optional to follow the trooper to the scale .

Let's say it was lawful to say no, bring them to me. DOT Officer says, they will be here in 9 hours. Meanwhile they now start a roadside inspection, search the cab and sleeper for no no's. I think I will take option A, follow you to the scale.
