I need go to Eureka, CA. US-199 in Oregon marked with orange in mcnally, but just regular road in California.
Is it California style signs "trucks not advised", "truck over 30' king pin to rear axle not advised" on "prohibited"?
my dispatch told me exit 120 miles before cali. its beautiful road, but too hard.
Can I use US-199 in nothern California?

I will verify with our GIS department.

Not over 30' kingpin means there is some pretty tight curves like 180's. Advised means they don't recommend it but you are not prohibited. Looking at Google Maps I see a 3 mile 6% grade then I see a 7-8 mile descent with some pretty serious curves like 20 mph 90's and even a few 180's. It's not impossible but it's more for someone well experienced with mountain driving. You will need both lanes on a few of them blind curves I've seen. Then near the end is another 3-4 mile descent full of curves. In between them sections is 55mph truck signs and even some 4 lane. The lanes look narrower than normal like 10' in spots.
I would do what your dispatcher tells you. That way if something happens you won't get in trouble.

48 96 trucks are good to use it. It is not an STAA highway, and not orange banded in the MCRA.
If you have a 53' trailer, then no you cannot use it.
If you use it with a 53', you can get a ticket for overlength.
Non-STAA = 48' 96"
STAA = 53' 96"/102"
From the GIS dept at RM.joseph1135, skellr and CondoCruiser Thank this. -
I used to deliver in Cave Junction, Or. There are numerous warning signs on the south end of town strongly advising doubles only. Northbound doubles drivers used to get on the CB telling me to turn around and go back. Since 199 is an STAA route to the state line it didn't apply to me as I always returned via Grants Pass to I-5. Hauling a 48/53 down that route is sketchy and a dice roll. I'd prefer 299 out of Redding which still has a 65' max length restriction .
tscottme and CondoCruiser Thank this. -
I ran across this today looking for something else Mark. I highlighted your GIS dept statement in red. Look at the sentence right behind it in green.
I also posted maps and relevant links. To me it sounds like these advisory routes are enter at your own risk considering you have the KPRA right.
US-199 has a 30 ft. KPRA advisory but reading the law below says they can't enforce below 38 ft.
It's still a dangerous road. Many time roads like that shorter is not better. You can probably drive that other route just as fast even though it's much longer.
Looking on googlemaps I seen a truck on it but it was a shorter trailer. I use to have a carpet route on mountain roads like that in KY/VA. It's fun driving.

Also this states only a 48 footer but 53 foot is okay with a 40' KPRA.

The stress ain't worth it. Go around.

You have to be 65' OA length. The 40' kingpin to rear axle applies to trailers OVER 48'. You cannot get to Eureka legally if you are over 65' OA. If you have a 53' trailer with 65" OA & 40' kingpin-to-rear axle you are still legal. The yellow signs telling you trucks over a certain kingpin to RA are not advised, are just that, advisory signs, not actual restrictions.
Please don't argue with me about this, I was born & raised in this country, have lived here all my life & have driven these roads in a truck since 1974.
If you are longer than 65' OA & want to get to Eureka, you will have to call someone with a short truck to pull your trailer through the length restricted portion. Wendt Construction in Fortuna or Danny Plato in Garberville do most of it for the folks running 101. To come down 199 you might try try to find Willie Whitchurch in Cave Junction.
Or just sneak it through late at night.Rubicon Thanks this. -
