I'm a owner operator. I'm currently with a company running my truck. I was wondering if I get an MC Number/DOT Number can I use it while I run under my company's number? I want my number to mature so when I break off and run completely solo, Ill be ready to call any broker and they'll see I have the maturity from my number to get their loads

Talk to your insurance person. The problem may lie in getting your own insurance while running under an employers'. I've heard that you can get a cheap pickup registered to your DOT and use it to park your insurance, which would be cheap enough to do. It's hearsay, but maybe a direction for you.

    Yes and No.

Yes you can apply for dot/mc numbers while working else where.
No you can’t run two numbers, BUT, if they allow you can have magnetic signs or be ugly and tape a sign with your dot number and company name but will be a headache with paper work and most companies don’t allow.
Then insurance headache of that too.

I’d say if your set in it, get numbers, all that’s legally required is the 750k insurance to keep numbers active.
Most want a vehicle because that’s like 7500+/year they’d be leaving on the table.

Thank you for your response. I do currently have a million dollars policy. I might go ahead and get the numbers since I do and go the way you suggested

You need liability insurance, IRP, UCR and possibly IFTA accounts under your own authority so there would be no need to continue running leased.

Maybe whoever you're leased with will broker their freight to your authority but I doubt that would happen.

    Rideandrepair and Grumppy Thank this.

IRP would be an issue too since the registration is tied to the carrier responsible for safety. He'd have to swap plates when he swaps door/DOT signs.

Getting your own numbers now to just throw money in the trash until it matures is ridiculous.

These brokers that want to see a mature number are most likely going to want to see a safety score. Then what? You can go months and months waiting for a dot inspection and if you get dinged you’ll be screwed.

Just save your money until you’re ready to jump in and go for it.

I had absolutely no problem getting loaded with brand new numbers.

You’re in business to make money not just toss it out the window.

You currently have a 1,000,000 policy, for what?

I have a million dollars policy because most companies want that. As well as a lot of brokers

You’re leased to a carrier, not running under your own authority.

Sounds like you need a mentor.

    Rideandrepair Thanks this.

No. That's what the carrier requires. I'm ok with it. It's only temporary until I go full blown on my own
