My grand daughter is going to college in another state. I don't have licensing to haul furniture. Can I move her from one state to another state?

Good question. I probably can't help you with the answer. But it might be helpful to others to know what vehicle you would be using to transport her stuff.

I would use my Semi truck and trailer. I just don't know the legalities with personal items. We really don't want to hire a moving company.

I'll be interested in hearing an official answer to this. My thoughts are, since you're not being paid or engaging in commerce to move it, it should be fine.

It's personal property, I wouldn't worry about it. A friend of mine moved from KS to OH last year. He put his winter kit on his cattle trailer, wrapped tarps around the furniture and took off. He didn't have any problems.

If you have general commodities authority you can haul someone's "furniture" or other personal property. But you cannot provide the services of a full service mover. That is a different animal. So no packing or loading can be included in the rate you charge. Those services must be provided by the shipper or a third party.

Claims in the household moving industry are handled very differently than for general freight. Something to be avoided if at all possible.

If it's personal then your fine. I have done it plenty and if you get stopped then just merely say it's your own furniture.

Go to a truck stop and pick up a generic BOL. Fill it out and you're done.

I got a little more information from my daughter. Seems they had hired a moving company. was going to cost$8000 for the move. After it was all packed then they changed the quote to $30,000. They panicked and called us to ask if we could do it. everything is at a warehouse now. They are paying to get it released $2000 (after threatening to contact dot) and will hire men to load the truck and and to unload. we will touch nothing. Hell there is a baby grand in there. The moving company says they want our dot number. don't know why. We aren't getting paid and the move is only 1200 miles. Can the other company cause us problems?

All too common for the industry. A lot of scam artist.

They don't need your DOT number. They are playing games.

Don't tell them or anybody what or if you are being paid. Just have a bill of lading for the shipment.

Your granddaughter is the shipper. How she ships her product is her business, not the moving company's. Tell her to tell them to 'goeth intercourse thyself'. Go to a truckstop, get a generic BOL, have her fill it out list everything, estimate the weight (I cant see it weighing more than 20000lbs, even with a baby grand), and you're legal.

Her gear is at their warehouse, isn't it? Once she pays $2000 and gets a signed release, if anyone from there asks you for any info, tell them to kiss your A s S, not on the left cheek, not on the right check, but right in the groove. If they push any further, call the cops ASAP. if she has the receipt for the $2k, they won't have a leg to stand on.
Next time, have them get all quotes in writing. $8000 to $30000 is obsurd. If $8000 was for 1 truckload, I would expect $30000 to be for 3 or more.

    Luck in battle.
