I can't remember if I checked off interstate or intrAstate on my application, but I'm wondering if that even matters.
I have a CDL with a passenger endorsement to occasionally drive a prison bus when needed. I have a buddy who lives in AZ who wants to buy a septic tanker truck in CA and drive it back to his place in AZ. He hasn't started a business yet but plans to, so I wouldn't be driving for a business or anything like that, just a guy going to fetch a truck in one state and bring it back to the state right next to it. Would it even matter if I checked intrAstate versus interstate? No DOT number needed? Keep a driver's log? Stop at weigh stations?
Can I drive interstate with my CDL if I checked off intrAstate on my application?

It IS a cmv. If he's trying to move it without the correct plates and insurance you are the one that will be sitting on the side of the road until he gets paperwork in order. Of course you will also be the one receiving the citations.
Just because he hasn't plated it yet, doesn't mean it's a personal vehicle. The move is for commercial reasons, and it's a CMV. DOT will not take "But I'm just moving it now, and it will be months before I start making money with it.". The fact he is planning to make money with it and the weight rating is what makes it a cmv.
You will be better off to get him to hire a drive away company to transport it.tscottme, Bean Jr. and CrappieJunkie Thank this. -
Well I'm glad I asked. Assuming he gets his plates in order and insurance and all that, would I be good to go with my license, as long as I get the tanker endorsement?

Your question about interstate and intrastate, Does Matter. Don’t get caught if you have “Intrastate” and your outside of your state. Been told by DMV, and Medical Examiners office. Make sure there both check “Interstate” if you go outside “Your” state, or you will taking the bus home.

Tell the owner to look into a Transporter of vehicles as a alternative. It will avoid legal snags or problems. The downside it will take a certain amount of money.

In Wis. I checked the tier thing "intrastate" and therefore, did not need a Med card. If I crossed a state line, I'd a been in a heap o' trouble. If they have a Med card, I wouldn't worry about it. And you better stop at the chicken coops, cowboy,,,of course, I never did, but that's a different story,,

I just had mine converted to keep my CDL without the medical card.
For N.C. it's a "K- intrastate" restriction code. must stay in state.Diesel Dave Thanks this.
