I found a company in CA that's willing to completely pay for my CDL and truck training. My only concern is that I have had a few criminal convictions when I was 18 yrs old being a ####### that I was back then, 1 was a felony and 2 misdemeanors. Earlier this year though I had the felony reduced to a misdemeanor and all charges dismissed. The application is asking me if I have ever been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony, which under section 1203.4 in CA I can say NO to, but then it asks if I had charges that were expunged so I will have to mark yes on that. Has anyone ever become a truck driver with expunged convictions? Will I automatically be disqualified?
Can I be a trucker?

ive seen MANY ads for driving jobs, and can tell you that many companies will not hire you if youve EVER had a felony...but then some say within the last 5 or 7 years. however, if its been expunged, would it show up on any background check? you say you would HAVE to mark yes on that part, and yet there wouldnt be anyone with a gun pointed at your head forcing a specific response? but if you felt the moral obligation to answer honestly, i can tell you there ARE companies that may consider you, but you will also find a slew that will not.

Hello and welcome. You may not be automatically disqualified--I have hired truck drivers with expunged convictions on their records although company policies vary on this. I've also worked at companies where we have hired company drivers with UNexpunged past felonies/misdemeanors. The best thing for you to do at this point is to call the HR/recruiting person for the company and let them know you have expunged convictions and ask them if this is going to be a problem. I know this is not the answer you probably want, but it is best to know up front what the company's policies are about expunged convictions. Since the felony charge was reduced to a misdemeanor, that does work in your favor and the fact that the charges were dismissed is a plus as well.
I hope that this works out for you okay...keep us updatedDealBreaker, 80'sbabytrucka, Trade50 and 1 other person Thank this. -
If there is no record of it and the felony was reduced to a misdemeanor I wouldnt say a thing, once you tell one company they will all know it. I have been driving for 15 years and I had a felony on my record but I have always been up front with everyone about it and never tried to hide it, but like they said I always asked first if they will hire with a felony. but if I was in your shoes i dont think i would say a thing being there is no record of a felony.

If you got the felony dropped down or expunged then don't put down anything about a felony. as for the misdemeanors it depends on what they're for. some companies don't want any misdemeanors and some want them to be five years old but there are plenty of companies that don't care if they're over 3 years old(that is if they are not drug related)

Just curious. I can't quite understand what happened. You have said that the felony was reduced to a misd., and then the charges were "dismissed". Usually in the court world, you first have "charges", then by trial or otherwise, they become convictions, found not guilty, ect. Never heard of charges dismissed after what appears to have been a conviction of some sort?

Thanks everyone for the replies. I got a little bit of hope back after I looked myself up on the court case index and found that the felony did get updated to a misdemeanor, unfortunately this case isn't purged until 2087 so this will be with me for the rest of my life. My charges will still show when background checked but under section 1203.4 as I understand it these convictions can't be used against me as grounds for refusal, so I'm somewhat confused as to why I'm being asked if I have expunged convictions because under 1203.4 I'm not legally obligated to disclose these charges to a private employer, never have had to before with any other employers. Is there something special about truck driving that makes this career choice an exception?

You will be ok, just can't enter Canada. Plenty of companies will hire you.

So I did a little searching on this forum about CRS and expunged records when I came across this quote,
