My question is rather quite straight forward, I'm wondering if I should purchase a semi with sleeper for sub $40,000. I'm hauling a 48 dry van approx 1600miles+ per week about, I run short hauls so typically no more then 500miles a day. so are there any trucks worth while under $40,000 and if so do you guys have any recommendations, ie Volvo, Prostar, Freightliner etc. Thanks for reading, hope to hear from you guys.
Can $40,000 get you a decent truck?

Depends on your definition of decent. I'm always browsing Kijiji for trucks, parts, equipment etc. Right around the $40k Canadian mark is where I see what I would consider decent. $40k US should probably get you something good I would think.

Couldn’t you get a Columbia with a solid series 60 in it for that?
No def and that’s a beast of a motor. Truck is uglier than sin but that’s a light truck that could make you plenty of money. -

The thing is, everyone's definition of "decent" is gonna be a little different.
Are you mechanically inclined? Plan on doing your own work? If so, that opens you up to a LOT more possibilities.
Do you want something newer cuz you think it'll be more reliable? Or can you handle some old iron? That'll will also open up more doors.
Good (in my opinion), older, pre emissions trucks can still be had for a few grand if you shop around. Might need a little work and a few bucks, but they (once again, my opinion) are some of the most reliable trucks on the road. -
Just picked up an 03 FLD with 185k on an inframe, 1.1million total for $15k. Yeah, they're out there, just gotta keep your eyes open

Anyhow.
Inflation probably equals about 60K or so in today's devalued dollar.
You should think about a Century, Columbia or similar along those lines. They are not particularly heavy, but should have at least a 500 Series 60 Detroit in it to be any good.
I don't have any particulars with the other truck brands because they all have their differences. If you find a Cummins, make it a 550 and up. More horse and one RPM less work needed to get where you are going. CAT will probably have to be a acert or similar. The original cats are passing by.Dave_in_AZ and Lepton1 Thank this. -
I got my '02 Classic for $20k, put about $10k into it the first two months and now it just makes me money.
