We tried both--and settled on--what we loving call PA DOT snow plows--and did see a slight fuel gain over the skirts--AND with much less problems--ALSO we did prove--at least in our case--that when tandems are NOT up a CALI bridge--the skirts took OUR fuel mileage backward.....
Now we DID NOT do any of this for CALI--we did it for US and overall fuel mileage
Since we only send ONE truck a week anymore out there--for our BEST customer--who pays us VERY WELL--and we only p/u for another company the BOSS owns so its HIS stuff and therefor cost effective....
Because contrary to some of the things posted on here--CALI rates are in the TOILET and have been for over 10 years--and I don't wanna hear any BS--about spot market rates--or pre holiday rates....
Because even this years pre holiday spot rates are 10-12% less than standard produce rates of the 90's
    So why bother?

    [h=2][IMG] Refrigerated Van Provision[/h]
Owners of model years 2003 to 2009, 53-foot or longer refrigerated-van trailers, or box-type trailers with reefer units equipped with 2003 or newer model year transport refrigeration unit engines, may delay the SmartWay Low Rolling Resistance (LRR) tire and aerodynamic requirements as shown below. Fleet owners that have only refrigerated-van trailers meeting the criteria above are not required to register or report for this special provision:

    • January 1, 2018 - for a 2003 or 2004 model year trailer
    • January 1, 2019 - for a 2005 or 2006 model year trailer
    • January 1, 2020 - for a 2007 to 2009 model year trailer

(Note: Registering and reporting is required for fleets comprised of both dry- and refrigerated-van trailers that choose to follow either the optional Small Fleet or Large Fleet Phase-in Compliance Schedule.)

I have a 2007 reefer with a 2012 engine installed so I'm good until 2020 it looks like. I don't think there is any way around it with a van but it only applies to vans and reefers so the skateboard guys are good on this one. My question is whether or not the wings are effective??? I was told by a large fleet manager that they were super effective and that they were installing them on all their trailers, then found out they own a piece of Strehl (Trailer Blade) so I am back to wondering if they work. The under tray system that I see on Landstar and some others seems more practical.

The carrier I'm leased to has a handful of new Wabash dry vans with side skirts. Noticeable difference in drag even behind a non aero truck. However, this only really applies if the tandems are at or forward of 41'. Can't quote a fuel economy figure because I'm rarely hooked to one for more than 4-500 miles.

Of course the skeptic in me says the decrease in felt drag is just due to newer wheel bearings :)

Wheres that Michael Vick Who guy at?

Yeah..You got an 'atta Boy" sticker huh? Kinda hard NOT to get one with your new equipment isnt it?

Try rolling in California with my Setup......Yes i maintain and baby my equipment BETTER than any shop could, Yet when they see the 'age' of my truck......They will either do 1 of 2 things.....

Stop me and say "WOW,What year is that"..Or "Pull it around back to the inspection building"............

See,You new kids with brand new equipment dont know ####, Give California what they want.(Trailer skirts,Fins, amd tire covers)...And they just smile as you drive b

I grew up in this I know a bit more than you like to think. I like older trucks. But I really like comfort of the new trucks. I remember the old Mack R models and the beating they gave you. And the old KW cabovers. Just because one likes am aerodynamic tractor that gets better fuel milage doesn't make them any less of a trucker.
