California drivers: what happens if you fail the CDL test 3 times?

From what I've been able to find out so far, they make you do the written all over again and pay a retest fee.

But do they make you go through school again too?

I'm having some anxiety because I failed my 1st two attempts (first time, pretrip; second time, it was the alley dock, and I also was sloppy on my offset back, both of which I did pretty consistently at school). If they make me go through trucking school again, I'm reconsidering my career options because that is not an option financially. I test again on the 11th, two days from now.

You just pay testing fees again. Maybe they make you do the written again, but I doubt it.

California doesn't require you to go through school -- you could have gotten your cdl all by yourself (though most companies would want you to have gone through a school).

Are driving schools ever known to cut people loose who fail 3 times and are forced to start over?

The one I am going to will make you wait 30 days and then you can come back and test. And there has been a couple of people come through and graduate during my tenure that have been on their 5th and 6th try, I guess it really depends on the school.

Most truck schools will keep "training" you until you pass the DMV test. Ca. has you pay the fee after 3 failed attempts.

I regained my CDL in CA without going through a school, retraining with my O/O brother and taking the drive tests in his truck. I failed the pre trip and skills tests 3 times, retook the written exam to get a new permit, then passed the drive test on the 4th attempt. Your school may have a policy in place to make room for new students. It seems that each school has a block of appointment times at the DMV for testing, so as each batch of students come up for testing they are going through the grinder. If you fail three times then you have to retake the written test and get back in line to be considered to go in with the "batch".

The whole purpose of them schools is for you to obtain your CDL. If you are a problem student then they should do more 1 on 1 close work with you. Though there is probably a signed contract I wouldn't be satisfied until you passed if it was a possibility. Not everyone is made to drive a truck. It's kind of like singing, you either got it or you don't. Focus on your weak points and if possible practice, practice, practice.

Your real training doesn't start until you hire in with a company and go out with a trainer.

I helped a problem student pass their test 18 years ago. They are still driving today. So keep your head up and keep on trying if that's what you want to do.
