Hello,
I'm preparing for my CDL permit and I have some questions.
http://www.dmv.org/ca-california/apply-cdl.php
Are these the standard procedures you go through?
Getting a CDL Permit
The first thing you must do is get a practice permit by passing a written test. Study theCalifornia Commercial Driver Handbook.
When you know this backward and forward, go on down to the local DMV, where you'll:
- Fill out an application form (form DL44C). Not available online.
- Provide proof of age and name.
- Get your picture taken and provide a thumbprint.
- Pass a vision test.
- Turn in a medical certificate.
- Verify your Social Security Number.
- Pay the application fee ($68 or $64 for Commercial Class A or B, $39 or $34 for Commercial Class C); endorsements are extra.
I'm confused in which one to choose?
New Federal Requirements
You must self-certify your type of vehicle operation with the California DMV by January 2014. This means you must self-certify one of the following driving categories:
- Non-Excepted Interstate
- Excepted Interstate
- Non-Excepted Intrastate
- Excepted Intrastate
If you choose Non-Excepted Interstate, you must provide the DMV with a federal medical certificate.
---
For the endorsements, I don't know which ones to take as of now (somebody told me it is better to take those endorsements when you take the permit), If I take the respective exams for each of those endorsements, after I pass my permit and driving exam, Is the process simple as paying the fee , taking the exam.
Or do I have to do that and go through those steps again:
Fill out an application form (form DL44C). Not available online.
Provide proof of age and name.
Get your picture taken and provide a thumbprint.
Pass a vision test.
Turn in a medical certificate.
Verify your Social Security Number.
Pay the application fee ($68 or $64 for Commercial Class A or B, $39 or $34 for Commercial Class C); endorsements are extra
About the expiration of those endorsements, do they all expire on the date of expiration of your license (five year intervals from date of birth).
Also I heard that, I must also take the Commercial Class C exam. How many hours is the permit exam (Class A, Class C, each of the endorsements, etc)?
Thanks.

Are you going to stay in state or go out of state?
-
California only recognizes 2 out of the 4 listed. Non-Excepted Interstate and Non-Excepted Intrastate. Long explanation short. Interstate (all 48 states), Intrastate (just California)
-
A federal med certificate if you choose. Non-Excepted Interstate is form DL-51. If you call ahead to a clinic ask if they have the form. 80% of the time they do. If not the lady at the check-in window at the DMV will get you one.
-
So if I decide to go out of state, I choose Non-Excepted Interstate ? The federal medical certificate, is that the green color dot card? So you are saying I fill out a DL-51 instead of the DL-44C? Also, the CDL written portion ( To get the permit to practice for the skills test), are there three parts that one takes:
1. The General Knowledge Test
2. The Combination Vehicle Test
3. The Air Brakes Test
You remember how long the exam was ?
Thanks for replying. -
Correct on the out of state part. Im not sure what the DL 44C is... could b a form replacement for the DL-51... not 100% sure. The DMV check in can answer that or if you call the DMV commercial line they could possibly answer that. It is a green med card. I renewed mine this last April 15th 2013 and was surprised to find the 4 new license certifications. Had to sit there and read up on this new change. What will also get yah is you have to physically walk into the dmv w the filled out med card and paperwork and get it scanned and stamped on the spot. I asked the clerk why we had to get our green cards stamped now... she said too many cheaters on the paperwork. Yay! So make sure you get your green med card stamped by the clerk. Its not valid until it is now.

Just flipped thru my med card file... was looking for what the DL 44C might be... figures the front perforating part it not attached. It explains what each one is. I vaguely remember something to do w farm equipment pr if your a firefighter its a different form. By the way good luck on your tests. They are definitely longer than the class C test. Its been awhile for me... can't remember how long they were. Just remember if you do hazmat every 5 years gotta do the Hazmat tests again along w fingerprinting. GOOD LUCK on tests!!!!!
-
Combo and air test are shorter from what I remember ... the gen knowledge was 35 questions I think??? Been awhile. Keep a good driving record don't have to take them all the time. But being in the trade for so long its common sense really. With logs been "officially" trucking for 7 years. But really been in it a bit longer.
-
Oh... just noticed you didn't ask about Hazmat. Sorry! I took everything there was as far as tests. Didn't want anything to limit me where ever I applied. Sure has paid off and glad my Pops encouraged me to take them all.
-
My intention is to get a CDL A and the appropriate endorsements to work in the oil fields (Hazmat seems to be important). I plan to visit the Texas, North Dakota, Pennsylvania areas and knock on doors ( I will also apply online before visiting the area).
So did you take the combo , air brake, gen knowledge all in one day?
Thanks for responding.
