CA DOT length violation 35400(a)

    Does anyone know the fine associated with the length violation in the thread title?

    Hubby thought he slid his tandems accurately when entering CA - unfortunately that was not the case. He got an infraction for being 2.6" too long - the DOT officer proved it to him (hubby said he was actually nice - not a d@#!). He has U.S. Legal Service, but I don't think there's too much reason to try that as he is indeed "guilty."

    Am I reading that correctly? He had his tandems at the 40ft 2.6 inch mark? Or was he at 42.5ft? Honestly if he was at 40ft 2.6" I'd fight that ticket and pick a day near the end of the month and get it thrown out. Sorry hut if California is going to argue over 2.6" they deserve to be cut off from the rest of the united states. But the law states 40ft from king pin to center of rear axle. Can't help with the fine though don't go to that hell hole and never will.

    i thought it was 41 feet in cali. 43 feet in new york.

    Thanks 379exhd! I'll double check with him on the 40ft+. My understanding though is we're talking 2.6" over length. He pays for U.S. Legal Service, so I'm thinking this is something he would use them for to fight the ticket, if that's the case.

    How did the officer prove it? I would have dropped the trailer and made the officer check the length from the actual kingpin itself to the center of the rear axle up under the trailer. I have heard of officers 'eyeballing' the location of the kingpin from the side of the trailer while the other officer 'eyeballs' the center of the rear wheel, the whole time the nylon tape measure they are using has a big belly in it which may explain a couple inches.

    Really?! Based on how long you've been driving I'm surprised you don't know the bridge laws by now.
    All that info is in the front of the map book. If you don't take the time to learn it, you'll only have yourself to blame!

    Cali also has a six inch tolerance on the Kpa length.

    But I ain't been driving long enough for this crowd!
