Hey everyone. I was wondering if anyone has heard of a coolant additive that swells, or re-seals the seal in a Cat water pump? A Cat mechanic friend of mine mentioned something when I told him my pump weep hole was leaking. When I asked him to elaborate; be more specific, he clammed up and changed the subject. I think he realized that he wouldn't make any money off me if I solved the issue without him.
Thanks in advance for any and all assistance.

No such thing. Any pour in fix would be temporary if it did work. Spend the money and replace the pump.

Or you could block the weep hole with sealant and wait for the coolant to start leaking in the crankcase and mixing with oil.

I agree that the pump should, and will be replaced. Was just curious if there actually exists, a liquid additive.

There are tons of coolant sealers such as Bars leaks and even tablets that dissolve and plug holes on the market. They are all temporary and IMO cause more troubles than is gained because they can contaminate and plug areas which need coolant flow. I would never recommend their use on any engine.

The reason why is I have chased my tail on diagnosing conditions or failures caused by such additives. That and they leave a mess behind that it tougher than oil to clean up.

Regular Ground Pepper will work in a radiator that swells with hot water because it wont breakdown anymore.
It's a temp fix for radiators only it's obviously going to run through your pump but wont fix a weep.

Cats are known for occasional minor weeping. They went so far as to install a piece of foam in the weephole in the late 90s. Increased leakage beyond a tiny occasional amount is a sign of imminent failure. Be ready for it to start leaking a lot, needing immediate repair. Or better yet fix it before that happens.

Truck sat for a few days over the holiday. Started it up and water pump began to seep feom the weep hole. I would say a good quart. Then it just stopped once engine warmed up. Ran it a few days. Parked it for a day. Started it up again and seeped for a bit. Stopped leaking once engine warmed up. Is it time for a new pump? Thanks

It’s most likely the mechanical seal. It’s a 2 piece sorta deal. You press the bearing into the case then the seal over the bearing into the case the piece that goes around bearing shaft is spring loaded. Then you put your second piece of seal on back of impeller without touching the seal surface or letting any contamination on bearing or impeller side then press impeller onto shaft slowly so you can set the clearance just before drag....sorry I have forgotten the actual number but eyeballing it always worked. Anyway the white part of that seal gets any grit behind it or starts deteriorating that sets in your leak. I always thought a lot of a coolant filter just for that aspect. Though it was probably misput hopes. I haven’t bought a kit in a long time but used to 150 bucks and a new plate and you was in business. Pumps was 600 ish at the time. That’s all the worthless info I’m good for today

Ok. I need a new pump. Cat Reman 10R-8660 which requires a core or Fleet Pride 44062HD.? There is about a $200 difference.
