I built a catch can for an a-cert I had once to catch the oil. drained it when I changed the oil. made it out of a small air tank I had laying around.

Im not having any problems, I just got this truck not too long ago and have no idea when it was changed last. Wanna make sure that crankcase is breathing properly is all. It is a metal filter element, looks kinda like steel wool. If I can clean it with carb cleaner or something Id go that route and leave it in place.

a can of brake cleaner would probably do it. saturate it real good with the brake cleaner then let it dry. do it over a bucket or trash can because it will get messy.

They are not a very expensive filter, just change it every 3 or 4 months that way u won't have any issues with it, if they are left to long it can end up causing a buildup of crankcase pressure and that is when u will start to see leaking pan gaskets and other oil leaks.

The filter is $230 at my cat dealer, no one else sells them that I can find. Do you
have a part number from where you buy? Guy at parts counter also says they havent sold any for a long long time.

I have cleaned them, soak them in a parts washer, flush it out with brake cleaner and blow it dry. I've never had a problem doing that and I've never replaced one. It's just a steel mesh filter, older Detroit Series 60's had a similar set up, I do the same thing to those.

I did talk to my cat dealer today and they said proper maintenance procedure is to clean with brake cleaner and then blow it dry. No need to replace. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.

Whoa 230 bucks, my Cat dealer sells them for 83 dollars and I live in Canada, I change mine every 1000 hrs that way it doesn't get to dirty and allows the crankcase to breathe.

yeah, grape ape is right, its not like a paper filter or anything, it is wire mesh, I believe you could pressure wash it, soak it in the sink , spray it with brake cleaner or about anything you wish, I really cant figure out exactly how it filters anything honestly. looks like all it would catch would be chunks of something

it doesn't really filter like a regular filter does. it just slows down the flow of aerated oil and redirects it back to the crank case so you don't get a oily mess under your truck.
