Have a truck in the shop that has a c-12 cat engine that has had the cam follower go out three times for the number 2 injector. From looking on the net this is a some what common issue. Anyone else ran into this before and is there a fix? The first time It was fixed by Caterpilliar, the second time by a local shop, and now it is at our shop.

Yes it is a very common thing for the c-12 always injector cam follower. There is nothing that has been made to fix problem. This happens because of the amount of pressure applyed by cam to injector. The center of the cam follower is brass and the brass wares if not caught in time it can ruin cam. From the steal part of the follower scrapping at the cam.Once the roller is up past the body thats it. It sucks having to pull a head just for a lifter.:biggrin_25510:

I wonder why it is the same injector and this is the third occurrence? Doing a google search most of the people posting issues like this had #2 injector issue as well.

    Thanks for the reply.

Thats funney we had a fleet of 50 kw's with c-12's They always had cam followers going out and it seemed #2 was the most common. We also had head gasket problems at around 500,000 it would go on 80% of the engines we had. Antifreeze in oil is always the sign, sometimes we would get lucky and it would be the water pump.

Next time the head is pulled off to replace the cam follower ensure the shaft is put back in right to allow for maximum lubrication. The other thing is the adjustment is critical. If it is loose it will allow the follower to hit harder. I would assume the cam has been replaced also as well.

Yeah I know the mechanic that did the work last and that the camshaft was replaced. Not sure if it was when Caterpillar did the work.
