Hello,
I am located in the state of California and I have four trucks. I was looking for how much it would cost it would cost for workers comp for my drivers (each individual drivers)? Does it go by payroll percentage (if percentage, how much?) or by a monthly rate (what would it be monthly then)? Also, where would I be getting it at? I've called a few places and they haven't led me anywhere.
Please help with this matter as it is much appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

All quotes I have seen have been a percentage. CA is going to be in the 15+% range for a small carrier with no work comp experience. The company you get your trucking insurance from should offer it. You want to make sure you get it on your own and not be caught by CA as not having it.

In CA, you have to have worker's comp to have a state MC number. The typical rates in CA are 24% of gross payroll and up for trucking. You're annual minimum premium is usually around $1,000 with about the same as a deposit. If you have any claims and your mod rate goes up, expect 30%+ for your rate. Yup, good ole CA. Hire 3 drivers and have the equivalent of a 4th driver in payroll expense for workers comp.
If you are new and don't have a history or company credit history, you might have to go with State Fund for a couple of years before anyone will accept you. And don't feel bad about the 24%. Friend of mine has had a couple of drivers file claims and he pays 48%. For legitimate claims, its good to have but there is an entire medical industry in CA that feeds on workers comp claims since its mandatory so be prepared to fight every claim to protect your mod rate.BigBadBill Thanks this.
