My good old FL Columbia 2007 is getting close to 900k original miles. The motor does not have the same power and MPG as before, dyno test showed 436 HP and 1700 ft-lbs to the wheels from 500 HP motor. Maybe needs new injectors - I don't know. For sure needs new main bearings. The rest of the truck is still good, have a working Tri-pack APU with low hours ~ less than 2200. New tires on all the axles.
What do you guys think? Sell this one and get a brand new truck or get a factory rebuilt from Detroit engine? With the installation is probably $25-30k and you get 3years/ 300k miles warranty.
Buying factory rebuilt engine or just get NEW truck???

Thats a lot for a detriot.
I have the exact same year truck and motor. But with 750k miles.
I would just have a regualr inframe done for around 16k. They will also warranty it.
Have you looked into that?
Thats should get you buy another few years.
Unless you wanna go into cali. In which case better trade it in. -
436 hp at the wheels on a 500 hp motor is only a 14% loss. The driveline of a truck runs 15+% loss so it looks like the motor is basicly healthy. I think I'd give the egr system a good cleaning replace the sensors and see how she feels.

CAT is about the only engine that you can get the rated HP at the wheels,,if you only have 900K miles do an inframe OH at a good shop that will give you a warranty on the OH usually 200K plus miles,,make sure that they can stand by their work
A 900K truck usually won't hurt an OH , your rears and trans at 900K will be needing if it has not been done already an OH at any time ..If you go to a dealer,,truck or engine like stuart and Stevenson expect to pay about $20K or so for an in frame,, if you go to a shop that is an authorized Detroit shop that can do warranty work you will pay less. Most dealers will want to replace everything ,,injectors,,turbo etc,,they want to rack up the bill as high a possible, a good independent Detroit shop will not make you do a turbo or injectors unless they are bad,,
I always did the pistons and sleves, reworked the head, a water pump,,fuel pumps,,turbos and injectors can last for ever or go bad in a 100,000 miles,, important about the head is the valve springs get fatigued and after many miles will break and drop a valve so the head reworked or reman is important,,Make sure they use genuine Detroit parts not after market
All of this is expected normal maintenance in owning a high mileage truck if you plan to keep it and there is nothing wrong with repairing or overhauling components as you go a long,,if it an't broke don't fix it but at 900K or more even if the engine is not using much oil the stress on the rods and pistons it is good to change them out for new before a rod fails and you need to replace the block from a broken piston or rod.
If you live in the west call Mason Diesel in Aroura,Ut off I-70 near Salina,Ut the do lots of engine over hauls and they do it right for about 30% less than a dealer,,I have used them for over 15 years .Verdel Thanks this. -
