Looking at buying a used truck and just wandering. I've found two trucks I like. One at a dealer, the other at a used truck dealer. Both are very comparable trucks at similar prices.
ive only bought a truck from the owner in the past. Is it possible either of these locations would offer any form of warranty? Just concerned about spending a lot of money, then The truck not being in good mechanical shape.
Suggestions? For what it's worth, one is Peterbilt of Knoxville, other is Jordan Truck Sales of Carrolton GA.

A dealer isn't gonna buy a junk truck cuz it won't sell. A used dealer is auction trucks. I'd go with dealer!

Most trucks are sold "as is." There could be some manufacturers warranty left on the drive train, depending on the mileage. Most dealers offer a warranty that you can purchase, but they are usually expensive. Most warranties don't cover that much for what they charge. You may get a 30 day warranty. Your best insurance will be to have an oil analysis and dyno done on your engine. You may also take a mechanic with you or take it to a shop and pay them to check everything. If the truck comes from one of the major dealers, they may already have gone through the truck before putting it on their lot. You can also ask for maintenance records. Whether you have a warranty or not, there is no way to take all the risk out of buying a truck. They all break, even when new. You should be able to tell a lot about a truck just by driving it. Good luck.

You can still get a good truck from a used truck dealer. Just make sure you check it out.
Chinatown, Cetane+ and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
Definitely run your checks on it either way - Rig Dig Report, ECM reports, front end inspection . . .
Side note - A friend bought an Audi A4 private sale, blowing smoke. Title search found it had been through 17 dealers in 1 year, they'd all bought it at auction, discovered the problem, and threw it back into the auction. Final buyer got duped. It would run great for about 4 miles then start the smoke machine trick.
Moral of the story, buyer beware.GITRDUN45 Thanks this. -
