Hello everybody
i am looking to buy my first trailer.
i am currently leased to company that I'm ready to quit and start my own authority.
The trailer is 860 miles north of me?
What is the best way to buy the trailer and bring it home?
can I somehow take a power load up?
or do I just bobtail there and drive back empty?
thanks !!!!!

where are you, where is the trailer ? depending on locations you should be able to get a power only and/or a loadout trailer to cut down your deadhead and hopefully make a few shillings. You'll need trailer interchange insurance for the power only or loadout, and you'll need plates and insurance in place on your trailer to bring back or get a load on it.

yep, you can't haul a load without plates on the trailer. and if you haul a load up. what you going to do with THAT trailer to bring yours back.
i'd just bobtail up and bring trailer back. you don't need plates to do that. and your fuel economy will be great bobtail. -
You can also get ALL the data on the trailer and get it plated before you leave.
So long as you have proof of purchase and registration, you are good.
If you can find a power only there, even better
I bought truck and trailer a year ago and did that. traded my van for a reefer in feb and did the same thing there. -
I am in N. Ca.
Trailer is NEAR Seattle, WA -
I've never bought a trailer near me. I've bobtailed, hauled power only and had the trailers hauled to me. It just depends on what you want to do. I've gone and bought a trailer and then had it tagged and went back to pick it up as well. I tag my trailers out of Maine, as they have third parties that do everything through the mail and no sales tax!
Rich_Trucking Thanks this. -
thank you,
how do you get it tagged out of Maine? if you don't have resident status there?
what website do you go to?
this is a very good idea because of all the CRAZY taxes here in CA!
I thought it had to be tagged from the state of residence,
its my first trailer, so I'm clueless -
Trailers can be tagged anywhere. Your IRP (truck) tags must be state of residence or where you maintain a physical, staffed office. I always used www.mbi-trailers.com in Scarborough ME. Not only do you save tax, but in FL the tag agency has to visually verify the VIN and most tag agencies don't have room for you to park a tractor trailer.
