I need some advise with Trailer purchase. I am looking at a Fontaine Renegade 50 foot. The distance from the kingpin to the center of the rear axle group is around 45 foot, most eastern states have a max distance of 41 foot. Wont this Trailer be illegal in these states ? This trailer has 29 foot in the well.
Thank you

You need to look into "kingpin to rear axle" laws. The bridge law is different and applies to weight. Each state is different. Some apply to trailers over 48' some only to 53' trailers. Some states say center of the "rear axle" and some say "rear axles". That "s" makes a big difference.
Oxbow Thanks this. -
I presume the tandems slide...you should be able to get to 41 feet...same as a 53 footer

I believe he is referring to a 50 ton lowboy trailer, and no the axles do not slide. The op will likely have to permit the trailer when empty or loaded in those states with KP issues. In part that is why you see 35/40 ton trailers built as 48' 2 axles with flip. The bigger trailers 50 ton and up may be built with a short neck 10/11' and a shorter well 26' to get to 48' OAL but most are not. Welcome to specialized transportation, every trip is going to require some planning.

I thought those were 48 feet.

Checked the spec. It's 48 feet without a flip. That makes it legal in all states.
