Yesterday I was loaned out to another division in my company and given a loaner to haul 50k pounds of lime in a dump trailer and it was a new kenworth with only 35k miles and a clutch pedal. Thought I would never see one of these again. It was nice getting to shift again, it has been four years since driving a ten speed but I was still able to shift smoothly and feel like a real trucker again. I got to go back to my regular flatbed automatic tomorrow, only the company's dump fleet gets to use ten speeds for some reason.

Anybody else seen their companies buying new standard transmission trucks?

After near 45 years of left leg push ups, I am less of a real truck driver who embraces the newest automated transmissions.
Sunday found me in a 35 minutes backup with the 5mph creep..no problems.
Later that night on 80/94 another backup on the Indiana side..no problem.
Yesterday the sign on the border said 69 minute delay coming into St Paul.
Easy peasy for a driver that runs congested cities.
    I runs what they provide.

I run what they provide too, and autos have advantages, I just prefer a manual, it cuts way down on the number of drivers that can take my truck when I'm off.

    I got a new KW T680 in 2021 with a 13-speed. I wasn't working at a big company.

    bzinger Thanks this.

First started driving 10 speed with the first company I worked for.

Don't care to go back at all to be honest. I'm just fine in a automatic.

    bzinger and ibcalm19 Thank this.

I had to custom order my Western Star (3 years ago) to have a 10 speed put in it. All they want to sell is the automatics.

What am I missing?, why would anyone that has to deal with traffic on a regular basis want a truck with a manual transmission?

    bzinger Thanks this.

I spent my first 5-6 years driving only 9-sp Eatons. A couple years later, I worked for a summer at a company which had Eaton 10-sp trannys. I swear, even after 3 months, I was STILL skipping 6th gear most of the time...

    bzinger and Oxbow Thank this.
