Hi, I am brand new to the trucking industry and I am seeking respectful guidance from professional like-minding individuals like yourself. I am confident that your advice will help my decision making process because your deep experience within in the industry. Please be so kind to share your best thoughts about my confusion on which truck to go with:
A) What I am looking at:
1. Brand New Truck (prefered) / Less Than 10K Miles (F450 Wrecker 60"or RAM 5500 Wrecker 60")
2. Brand New Truck to come with a full bumper to bumper warranty with the possibility to end the warranty
3. Dyanmic 755 Lift or an Intruder 812. A Jerr-Dan MPL-40 would also work. I bet these are the best three lifts in the industry from the research I've done. The dynamic lift has a FOUR YEAR warranty so I would like to commit to this lift, but please feel free to provide your own advice of course.
4. I am a warranty-concious buyer because I am brand new in the industry and have no mechanical experience whatsoever.
5. Must be 4x4? I live in Philadelphia so we have snow here.
I am looking between the F450 power stroke 2013 (found a brand new one) with a Dynamic 755 Lift and Ramsey Winch for $56k (really good deal I feel, advice?). Its a brand new truck that has never been titled before.
Now I heard it was a waste to have a 4x4 because the pounds in the drivetrain are too hard and the F450 I am looking at has dual wheels in the rear. Is this advice accurate or it is still better to have a 4x4?
I am also looking at building a brand new truck but using a RAM 5500 because I've been told by some people in the tow truck industry that the RAM 5500 is more dependable than a F450 and the POWERSTROKE is garbage and constantly blows. Would you agree? or differ? Why?
The issues I have heard with the RAM 5500 is that the car cannot start if the truck has TOO MUCH DEF fluid and it is a big deal with RAM's apparently. As opposed to the FORD F450 that doesn't have that issue.
I was also told that you cannot snow plow with a RAM 5500 Wrecker but with a FORD F450 wrecker you can. Also, I was told the RAM 5500 is taller than the F450 so therefore the F450 can go into smaller places like parking garages where a 5500 cannot? Is this true?
I was told that to operate a 5500 you need a C CLASS drivers licenses in PA but a F450 you can have a regular drivers license.
Overall, I am looking for the most dependable truck where I can go about my business and not have too many issues. I appreciate your help and time on answering my questions, please let me know if you need any more information. I hope I was clear on everything. Thank you and Happy Halloween.

Each maker makes good ones, and bad ones...I wouldnt be picky on maker...
Low miles, few years old, def 4x4, def plow attachmnt. FLATBED with wheel lift....Probably the ford..30 years exp beating on both trucks...Fords much longer lasting.10 k more for Ram, 10k upgrades needed to match Ford power/pull capabilities..
I love the Rams...318's. 360's..of coursely the cummins''s's...
Again tho..your RR.(rag rate) is equal...So, find one equipped how you want it,
Anyways, I loved the Fords automatics..geared awesomely..I used to run Mt lemon AAA calls way back when..Id put Ford on cruise, it would pull me up or down mountain easily, with Ram, it would bog, the automatics sucked, the manuals geared like a 72 kenworth 26speed, it was stoopid...
Fords...Flatbed, if only one...If not, you'll be lookin for flattbedders to farm out some calls...Night one!!! Promise ya...First hour maybe!
I love sling tow's, all the wheel lift's...But one truck? Flatbed,,If you got a woody for slingin and wheel liftin, then have it on the flatbed..get a 4 door!! Be able to squeeze 19 people in back...
Have good scanner,,You can stay busy poachin off that, all day long...You can find the frequencies you want,,
Have fun, stay small, dont let a couple hundred K rot your brain, you buy 5 trucks, your f'ed man..dont get big..buy one truck for each need, if needed...base it on the calls you get I guess..
You could pay cash for a 1972 chevy Holmes 440 wrecker for 2500 bucks and do well too!!..
If the brake pops off, and rig rolls over mountain, so what!!..Self nsure, for, well...2500 bucks...lol
I rant an ramble..from the trenches... -
Get the 'sharkbed' with wheellift..L' arm system
Get strobelights everywhere..uppers, downers, all'a'rounders..etc etc
Def chains on board, def buy more cable than normal,,,get a 500 ft cable for the rear winch...
Always use a floor jack for missing wheel situations, winch the dogcrap out of it, safety strap both sides, should be good all the way..
Dont let busted ball joints and crazy wrecks matter, jack it up, winch it up, fricken roll!!....(right?)
Always need good jack...Always need jumper box, and heavy duty cables -
Just my 2 cents.. nothing serious
I dont know how they are today.. I havent towed in over 20 yrs. I look at the equipment.. and the designs dont look much different than 20 yrs ago.
Anyway... back in tbe day a Holmes 220 was the Mack truck of tow equipment. Ancient and outdated today.. sorry.. had to put that in there. But back in the day.the only guys using a Dynamic were the repo guys.. quick.. easy in and out.. usually electric pumps with in cab controls. The Dynamics were notoriously plagued with hydraulic problems and they did not stand up to heavy work loads.
Vulcan and Jerr Dan were the 2 best. I preferred Vulcan because of the deep wheel pockets in the L bars. Used to be you could just lift and go.. you hade to hit something pretty serious for a vehicle to pop out. Jerr Dan had an issue with the frame cracking on Ford trucks. Last I heard they resolved it by sleeving the frame at the stress point.
This is all 20yr old opinions.. so if much has changed.. I have not kept up with it.

Again, any truck could have been 'floored' from mile one allday long everyday and had the seals pushed out of it

I seem to tow for a year or two, every decade...all e-log, , , e dispatch. paddleshifter automatic, wireless remote controls for for equipment and lights...all caddilacs now, Im sure you know..taking a moment for the ol' holmes units...i used to boost my friiends uncle davids truck, for a way to get down to score ciggarettes, GMC with a Pontiac 400, 4 speed w/granny..loud!!! sounded like top fuel dragster to me!!!, could pull wheelies!!!
BostonTanker Thanks this. -
Gotta have low bed, and lumber here, lots of low riders...lowered blazers, 4x4 camaros !! No need for high bed, ever

I need more specific advice in regards to my questions. Please help.

Dodge 5500 have brake and ball joint issues. Comes with Cummins 6.7 / 6 spd aisin auto or 6 spd manual. 19,500 gvw. Better for flatbed than wrecker.
F450 with 6.7 psd is meh, hit or miss. Lower than 5500. Still a popular workhorse amongst the wrecker guys, although they went to 17.5" wheels instead of 19.5". Lots of guys went to 6.8L v10 gas motor due to psd issues.
I don't personal care for the dynamic autoloader. If you want an auto loader, go with JerrDan. I used and abused the one I had. Make sure to get the heavier of the two. ( they have a more medium duty one, and get the one that has negative tilt. )
Get a set of Collins aluminum dollies.truckon Thanks this. -
And if you're going with a 60" c/a, get the super springs. You'll thank me later
