so im with this new acount hauling building materials around. the equipment are ryder lease columbias. old and beat up with 4-600k miles. they are used and abused. why they signed a extention on the lease is beyond me, but im sure there saving money. anyways. i took this load out and when i was on the nj turnpike and actually had to give the brakes a good use i instanly got this "oh ####. that aint good feeling" hitting the brake pedal slowed the truck down. then like it stopped slowing it down for a split second then it slowed it down again... it kinda does this on and off. if i was tailing someone to close i woulda rear ended them.sorta felt like i was pulling a trailer with anti lock brake when i was trying to lock it up and it would stop me like....... .... .... ..... .... .... it did it prolly 75% of the time the rest of the day. when i got back to the yeard. i disconnected the unit fom the trailer and got it up to speed in the yard and hit the brakes hard and i didnt get this pulsating stop/go feeling on the pedal. it just stopped normally. so im assuming its the trailer that was causing this.. the primary air gauge was at 140psi all day and the tank kept purging every 15 seconds all day long. the secondary air gauge was at the 120 arrow. I took it to ryder the first day i noticed it and they said oh we cant give u a sub truck till we look at it and find theres an issue, and were busy now. plus my boss needs all trucks for the next day so i couldnt just drop it. so i was kinda forced to takeing it out again. that and the 5th wheel slack is ridiclous. i dont hear any air leaks and the gauges stay put. any ideas?

Did you write it up? Ifso what mechanic signed off on saying that it was ok to drive?
Or did you just decide to take it back out on the KNOWING it had a problem cause your boss needs it?
You are the driver, you have the final say so! You are the one that's going to get the ticket, pay the fine and possibly do the TIME! Learn to say NO!
I'm I being hard? Hell yea, and for a good reason, it's your butt on the line here and I don't think you know it! Your boss does and so does Ryder. CYA!!!

Yea, What he said! You should have written it up, and had the mechanic sign it saying it's o.k. Bet he would have given you a different truck. Now, you're on the hook for any accidents. And you can bet your boss won't be on your side if you have an accident.

ummm, the boss has the final say.

    drive it or be fired.

yall make it sound soooooooooooo easy to just say i'm not doing my job in this rig. well, we dont' have another rig for you to drive. and no one can find anything wrong with the truck. or the company just isn't paying to fix the truck.

That would be your ABS kicking in. It does that so the wheels don't lock up. If you'd had a truck w/o ABS, you'd have been smoking the tires. My new trailer does that to me with it's ABS system. i just had to adjust to it was all.

Deff sounds like your air dryer may have a bad check ball or a bad seal as well, with it popping off like that, but that won't casue the stopping issue you described.

i had this instance come up when i hooked up to a ABS chassis and my truck non ABS it seems the chassis had a bad 1000 valve or w.e. the main one so as soon as you would tap breaks it would slow truck down almost to a stop without even hitting them that hard, just normal taps.

When i returned back to terminal to get another chassis i told yard mech and he had told me the main valve on chassis was bad..

    check into this

ABS is good when its working properly but after long use and a couple years they usually start to give valve issues. not that its a bad system but just not durable enough to use on CLASS 8 equip IMO.

i told my boss the unit shouldnt be driven because its dangerous. and ryder said they cant look at it because they were busy.. so its either use it or sit home and not work. its a ###### situation, but i need to work. I wrote the post to see if neone knows what it may be so if its a trailer issue then i can drop the trailer. we do have a old spare trailer that no one wants to use. as far as tractors thats ryders ######## policy. we dont sub out trucks until our mechanic finds an issue. the jobs not paying me overtime to sit there at the shop and i aint doin it on my time either. gave me a reason not to ride to close all day. the weird part is like 10 traffic lights inna row it would brake and slow down normally. then the next 10 it would act up and have a stop /no stop sensation. the equipmemnt is shot. i got in the truck and there was a sandwich on the floor from the driver before me.its was actually comical how disgusting the truck was. A roll of paper towels and some windex and i was truckn suprisingly the truck shifted and steered like a dream tho

Better to sit home and not work than to end your career by getting into a wreck with a tractor trailer you KNEW had braking problems. No easy answers here, just a 'C.Y.A'. No one will stand beside you if things go wrong at the worst possible moment. The effect you describe may be a trailer problem, or it could be a manfuctioning tractor ABS dumping braking pressure to a perfectly good brake unit. The air gauge readings alone would park me in the garage; that much difference between primary and secondary air when they're being fed by the same compressor?

An outfit that would fire you for refusing to drive unsafe equipment isn't worth working for.

Whatever your choice, good luck to ya.

You are being considerate and kind by telling someone to CYA (Cover Your ###). It scares me how little some drivers know and what is even worse is the companies not following the Right To Know Act and informing the drivers. How can a person be a better driver if he/she does not have all the facts?

    Thank you for helping him.
