anyone ever replace a turbo oil line with a braided one?

I'm looking to do that on my Detroit (Series 60) engine, but not sure what might be involved or how to go about this..

It would be very simple. Even easier then installing the OEM line. The hardest part would be removing the old line. IIRC the fittings are just 45degree flares on the turbo and the rear of the oil cooler. Might have to make a few brackets because the new line wouldn't be as rigid as the steel line. The only problem you might run into is if you have a remote mounted oil filter. I have seen some detroits come w/ a 3rd oil filter that use a "T" in the turbo feed line to supply it.

Would it withstand the heat it's just a rubber hose inside the braid isn't it?

I had no idea how LONG this pipe actually is. In this case, it doesnt make much sense. I had thought the feed line was only a few inches but it makes quite a trip up, over, down and in...

I agree. Stratoflex line (metal braid) won't take the heat in the area of the turbo.

Ya know the turbo waste gate is run by a rubber hose that sits almost on top of the exhaust side of the turbo, and it doesnt melt....weird..
I need to see what kind of fitting I have on this turbo.
The new turbo didnt come with any input fitting (just a threaded hole) but the one I have leaks anyway.

I figured I can take it off and take it somewhere, likely a Freightshaker dealer and get a replacement for the new K31 turbo.

If you are having trouble finding one--see if there is a custom motorcycle shop in the area Russell(brand name)makes very strong and heat resistant braided stainless oil and brake lines--most of the higher end custom (and all race bikes)use this and most better shops carry rolls of the stuff--just buy the length you need and then put the ends on
    just my $.02

I can tell you from personal experience, if it gets to close it will melt. I had to make a clamp off my air cleaner to hold it far enough away.
But then who needs the waste gate, imagine the extra power you can get without it.

    Hanadarko Thanks this.

Well this just got ugly. :biggrin_25521:

The pipe that feeds the oil inlet on the turbo has a stripped flare nut.
I knew the threaded part into the turbo was stripped but didnt think they BOTH were. Dam..
(I didnt do this, the original owner obviously did when he swapped out the turbo)

So, I am now after a new Detroit oil feed pipe.
KW can't help me of course...:biggrin_25513:

It comes from the side of the dual oil filter housing module and up/along the engine....its a long length pipe.

Part 11 is what I am after...
