I was recently inquiring about an independent contractor job and was looking into one of those Isuzu NPR 16 ft box trucks and was wondering if anyone on this forum has knowledge about them. I had a few questions as I am new to interstate trucking.

    1) Are these trucks reliable?
    2) Are they good for 100k, 250k, 500k, 1mil or more miles?
    3) How many MPG's do they get?
    4) Do you have to stop at weight stations and port of entries?
    5) Do you register them at a CDL office or regular DMV? (I know they aren't CDL trucks)
    6) Do you have to get truck insurance or can I put it on my regular insurance?

Thank you for your time I really appreciate any help.

    reasonably so
i cannot give this information, but any good deal of PM service and they should give you many miles of trouble free service
    i cannot answer this one
YES......it would still be a commercial vehicle
    at the DMV
truck insurance, they are NOT passenger cars...but your "regular insurance company" may provide truck insurance as well as auto insurance, and may have rates lower for you since you already have insurance with them....check with them........

Don't you have to be over 20k GVW to need to go through the scales?

    DMV will extract their pint

    So will the Insurance Co.

from what i gather he says it does not need a CDL (no air brakes, low weight), however, if its going to be used for commercial purposes (plated as such, name on sides) he will have to enter the scales. they can flag him right on through if they so desire.....

Thanks everyone for your help and knowledge. But as an independent contractor for a company do you have to have the company's name on the side of the truck? They run all non CDL vehicles (24 ft box trucks under 26,000k #'s, 16 ft box trucks and cargo vans) and I dont see any of them with names on them.

Here's an ad for a truck I found on Craigslist:
Great Condition!!! Must see 2000 Isuzu NPR 16ft w/refrigeration it only has 88,833 miles, A/C, Kenwood AM/FM Stereo, Tires have 50% life, Maintenance always done at Dealer,
Vehicle registered at DMV as non-operating vehicle. For any questions please call XXX # xxx-xxx-xxxx Thank you

Now I'm curious what the registration means?

And so you guys are saying that the only way to avoid the scales would be a service like prepass? Does prepass go for just the scales or is it for port of entry's also?

first, who mentioned pre-pass......???? or going around (avoiding) the scales.....??? no one here from what i have read......

second, maybe the laws are different "out there" but generally when a vehicle is used for commercial purposes, the name MUST be on the truck.

i cannot tel you about the "non operating motor vehicle".......in your state....... non operating usually means junk, salvage only.......over here.....

Do 'box' trucks only haul boxes?

What do straight jobs with van bodies haul?

Youre right sorry I gave the wrong information. I meant to imply that prepass is the only way to not have to stop at the scales if youre lucky.

Thanks for your help rerun I'll try to be more careful with my words next time.
