I'm not exactly a "newbie" but I couldn't decide where to ask this so I suppose here is as good as any.

Around here the USPS hires drivers with there own box trucks to haul mail from terminal to terminal to big buildings and so forth. Anyone know who I need to get in contact with to get a contract with them?

My boss's dad and a friends father both do it but neither one of them is awake right now for me to ask so can any of you guys help me out? Will I need my own authority or would I just be leased on to them? Are there restrictions on years, makes, models, size of boxes, etc.

I drive right now for Wayne Dalton of Lansing delivering garage doors but I would like to "start my own fleet" so to speak. I know these contracts don't pay huge after all your expenses are taken out but if I could go home with at least what I make now ($400/ week take home) driving myself and/ or the possibility of expanding and putting on a driver or two in the future it would be satisfying to work for myself.

Near as I can tell, from seeing some of the contracted guys leaving the truck stops it looks like all you need equipment wise is a 20' or better dock high truck with the hold down equipment (bars, straps and such) on the inside and a will to work. If anyone could shed some light n this I'd appreciate it. I will also keep you updated as to what I find out from my local contacts as they become available.

    Thanks.

different areas of the country have different needs to get the mail delivered. I lived in W. Ky. for 2 yrs and the local mail delivery was contracted out to indivduals using their own personal cars. The mail came from the DC in a small box truck, obviously a contractor. Arrive in the AM early and again late afternoon for outbound mail. There was always an ad for mail delivery personnel. The post office had one postal service vehicle. Check with the local post office, it is a bid system. You need good background and proper vehicle, but I must say, a lot of truck trailer contractors contracted with USPS are junky looking.

How to register to become a contractor of services for USPS is here I believe.

    Supplier Registration

I have heard that a single box truck is not sufficient. You have to have back up equipment to ensure you can get their mail moved. So I've been told. Good luck.
