If anyone ever contemplate the idea in buying a truck from Ryder , please think twice. No, think 10 times before doing so. I did and after spending 15k in just three months ( I was provided with a "Dyno" report and all) I now have a transmission issue and my engine is also in need of repair. Guys, I am not a new driver. I have 15 years experience and I did take precaution before buying it...but I got hosed. This trucks are worthless and all money you make, will go thru the mechanic. I was prepared financially to start my own business but could never expect to have just issues and issues and more issues. Ryder is the worse dealer out there. I had 6 trucks in my life time, but by far, this is the worse experience. Don't trust anything they say. Don't. Save yourself from major headaches.

average of a different truck every 2.5 years, I know drivers who like to trade in every 4 or 5 but that soon seems like it would really damper profits.

i would hesitate to buy a used truck from ANY rental company. car/truck/suv/semi/etc. ALL rentals/leases are beaten to ####. i woul rather buy a old company truck

Depends on what you pay for it when you buy it.
If you can buy it cheap and rebuild some stuff before you use it.........you might end up with a decent priced truck with a lot off new parts.

The most important tool for any O/O is not his truck.
    It is his calculator.:yes2557:

I'd say you got a "lemon" that possibly was a lemon from day one of Ryder getting it, they just rode the warranty and probably because it was Ryder and NOT you or me, they sucked up to them and kept on fixing stuff THAT WAS BEYOND WARRANTY just to save face ! I hate that it happened to you, but as to the other guy that said "he wouldn't buy any rental vehicle, they have been beat to ######", well my personal experience we can't say that. We've owned several personal cars that came from a rental fleet and drove all of 'em 200k PLUS miles. Same goes for a couple road tractors I've bought. The one thing you have to look at is all these vehicles go back through their respective shops regularly, that's better than some. Was this truck an "auto shift" truck ? I'm just curious since you mentioned transmission problems, you couldn't give me one o' those NO MATTER WHICH BRAND it might be ! Beyond 5-600k mi you're running on borrowed time, not that there's gonna be internal problems like bearings and such, it's that all the multi pin connections to make that "idiot proof truck" truck work have had time to get road grime and salt in them and start screwing up. Again man, I'm sorry to hear of all the problems you've had with your used Ryder truck, but I've heard way more GOOD than bad over 36 years of being out here with used trucks coming from Ryder, Penske or the dealer ones like Advantage (Volvo), Idealease (international) or MHC (Kenworth). Now if you have to have what I call a "smog truck" for CA and your used truck had 550-650k miles on it, then you were right there at the "DPF is gonna need it's $5000 replacement" mileage. That woulda made that truck a bad choice and is the MAIN REASON these fleets turn over their newer trucks fitted with DEF/DPF BEFORE that mileage to avoid the wrecker bills and expense. Of course, these "smog trucks" are totally unreliable pieces of @@!!##$$!!$$t anyway because YOU CANNOT CHOKE A MOTOR THAT MUCH by recirculating so much smut back through the engine to not expect problems. Good luck, and unless you indeed did get a bonified lemon, after you get some of these "shelf life items" replaced, the tide will turn for you hopefully. But I fully understand that absolutely KILLS the pocketbook and has put many outta business in the process. I've been buying older trucks and fixing on them as I go for years, and my payments ain't as big on a road tractor (if I wasn't fortunate enough to pay cash) as some people's car & pickup payments and at least mine has a chance to pay for itself. Hopefully you're on the uphill climb now from your problems.

He may be spot on...... my fleet exp. with Ryder on their long term lease was horrible. They run max maint. schedules that frequently run over plus they have several regressive internal policies on how to handle repairs.

"The company truck " comes to mind here. Never a need to check anything on the co. truck...just add gas and go. The co. truck doesn't need any of that cool stuff like oil or water....no need to check those tires either....it's a co. truck!!!

Bottom line is just that, cheap as they can until it sells. I personally would not buy a rented commercial unit.

But on the other hand, I own an Enterprise off rental car and it's a jewel. Got it at 30k miles and 3 years ago....love it. Not a moments problem except the usual wiper blades and fluids. Got a good price and it's a Dodge. ( usually a bad rap )

buying a used rental car is no different then buying a used car. and at 30k miles. what kind of wear are you really going to find, other then tires or brakes. and HOPEFULY oil changes. kind of hard to beat the crap out of a car.

that can't even compare to buying a used rental truck.

i disagree completely with this. I know I once rented a car, back when I was young and dumb, drove it from Virginia to Alabama and back as hard as it would go. Spent a good bit of time over 100 mph and every takeoff was a burnout or as hard as it would go. Every stop was a hard stop. I DID SAY I WAS YOUNG AND DUMB. I know not everyone does this but I also know that I am not the only one that did. It would have to be a really good deal for me to look at anything that has been used as a rental. Not saying you can't find a deal but it is a crap shoot as to how it has been treated. IMO.

I know where you're coming from. I worked for a Ryder lessee (fleet lease), then for Ryder themselves. I've never had as many breakdowns as in a Ryder truck. That coupled with what I know about their shop operations (management gets bonuses for spending as little as possible on maintenance per quarter, for example) steers me far away from considering their units.

They have some decent shops, that actually take care of their equipment, but in my experience they're not the norm.
