Hey fellas, I need to know what to do or who to talk to about getting insurance so I can bring back a truck bought not too long ago. I bought it at ritchie bros auction in Forth worth TX and I am looking to drive it back to PA. First time buying a truck, will eventually lease to a carrier but I need to bring it home first. Any one know a way I can sure insurance for the sole purpose of driving it home and not pay an arm and a leg. I did talk to the folks at OOIDA and the offered me a 5 day moving insurance along with a one year bobtail/ physical damage protection contract. Will like to know how you to go about this and what other options out there. I don't have much time left, they are bothering me to come get the truck out of their lot. Thanx
Bought a truck and need insurance to drive it home.

If your planning on putting it on the road soon, don't forget you may need to take it in for maintenance, yearly inspection sticker, lease inspection, lettering, etc... Bobtail insurance isn't much.

Don't forget to pay your 2290 Heavy Road Use Tax $550 a year but since its half way thru it I believe it's prorated, its due 1st of July annually but your 2290 must be filed by the last day of the month following the month of first use. Go to your local IRS Office and pay in person so you don't have to wait for your stamped 2290 or you can pay it online your need to apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) it's free then you can pay your heavy road use tax online will take 4-6 weeks to get your stamped 2290 back . Then you need to get the title in your name and that's going to cost you roughly 5% of what you bought it for up to I believe $2,500 check with your home state's DMV. This will cover your sales tax, title fee's. Make sure the dealership gives you a fresh DOT Inspection rolling off the lot, this will save you a little cash starting off.
Apply for EIN# here; http://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Small...n-Employer-Identification-Number-(EIN)-Online
File Form 2290 here; http://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Small-Businesses-&-Self-Employed/Trucking-Tax-Center
Hope this helped a little, good luck with your new truck.Last edited: Jan 1, 2014

Did you by chance ask richie bros if they have a service they work with or recommend? Usually they can direct you to a company that helps with this and your temp permit to get it home.

Check with your existing coverage. Your coverage now may cover you if you bobtail home.
As far as actual bobtail ins, if you know who you are going to lease on to, call them. Some ins. companies only insure certain carriers, so you may end up getting a different ins. in the end.
Check cancellation fees also. Some may penalize you for early cancellation. I don't believe that you can actally get bobtail instance without actually signing a lease.
You can also check what it would cost to have it shipped. It may cost double what your expenses are driving back, but it's your time, finding ins, etc.
I am in Philly, too. Let me know how you make out. I have always wondered about doing this. I would bet you got a good bargain at this time of year. Good luck. -
When I bought mine I called my auto insurance company. Explained it out and value of truck. She put me on until I called to cancel it once I had big truck coverage. And cost was under 100 in my case. Although the cost will vary I'm sure. She emailed me a card that showed my truck and other vehicles. Hope it helps

Thanks Riskyb. A friend of mine used them on an 04 Columbia he just bought not too long ago, his down payment was about $500 and $280 monthly on truck and trailer, mine is an 07 Pete 379 car hauler with no trailer, and the rate they offered me was about $100 monthly more than hes. Frankly, I don't think its that bad but its always good to know your option. The dealer that sold the truck to the auction is here in pa so i plan to take a trip down there and see what they can do for me. I did start the paper work already, got the EIN number and all that, just waiting for the trailer guy to get done so i can move ahead with the rest of the formalities. I am having a trailer i have already refurbished and its costing an eye, arm and leg. Wouldn't be a smart idea paying all that tax and title fees and run out of funds to get the equipment ready. Thanks a lot. I am heading out there today, I will keep you posted.
