Hey guys. I’m new to here. I have a 99 N14 Celect Plus. My turbo blew out. No smoke/oil was coming out of exhaust. I drove about 20 miles to the nearest repair shop. Got a reman turbo called roadside assistance to change the turbo. Long story short, we put new turbo on, truck starts just fine and as I take off, and give it a little more gas and I just hear an “explosion”. Shut off the truck immediately. Oil cap blew off dip stick blew off. Call the roadside again, they come back, take off the cover from the engine and we see broken valves and more stuff. Got the truck towed to a repair shop, they drained at least a gallon of oil from charge cooler and I had to rebuild the entire engine since pistons got damaged etc. question: was all of this caused by the roadside guys not cleaning the charge cooler after the turbo went bad? Or is there something more to it?

Sounds like a bunch of oil was pushed into the intake.
Was the roadside a national service or some guy in a Toyota with a set of rusty wrenches?
Shop will need to prove it was roadside tech's fault else you will be buying an inframe or crate motorRideandrepair Thanks this. -
Idk why but it doesn't let me reply from my account. It was a local guy but he had good reviews on Google etc that's why I went for it. This is what the shop wrote in the report. "Truck came in with dropped valves on #1 cylinder head and bent valves on #2,3 heads, find out that turbo was recently replaced and oil left in CAC caused engine runaway, removed heads and find #1,2 pistons destroyed, also rest of the pistons have damage from bent valves, had to rebuilt all cylinders and replaced all3 heads, jake housing #1 was destroyed by valves, replaced with another one, assembled engine with new parts, removed and cleaned CAC, installed new turbo, oil and filters, start engine and test ran OK." The roadside is claiming that they checked the charge cooler and said there was no oil, but im pretty sure they didnt unscrew the bottom hose to see if there's oil. I'm just trying to figure out if it's their fault or not, and if yes, if I could claim negligence.

"find out that turbo was recently replaced and oil left in CAC caused engine runaway" Sounds like from the shop report you could assume that the roadside assistance either didn't check at all or just went through the motions and didn't care what they saw. You could try the route of Negligence on his part, but I doubt you would see anything come of it.

In the past I would remove the CAC pipe going to the intake and run the motor to check for oil. You would be surprised how much oil hides in those things after a popped turbo.

Would you say I have a good case to present in court? It all ended up costing me $17+k. The guy was claiming that it's either the new turbo was bad or engine just decided to drop a valve but neither sound like possibilities to me since 1) it was a runaway and the valve would cause an instant "explosion" 2) if new turbo was bad, wouldn't it just start slow runaway, without a sudden explosion as I gave it a little gas?

They should have taken charge air cooler off and ck. it for oil and parts of turbo vanes that may have been laying in oil when it went bad?

In my own experience having worked in the court system and having dealt with cases similar to this, I would consult an attorney and weight your options carefully. Cases like that are not a easy hurdle to prove and end up costing a fair amount to litigate.

It wasnt a runaway per say, it was more so that the engine hydro locked on engine oil. When the first turbo let go, pumped some oil into the CAC, then the engine got fed a big shot of oil from the CAC when you took off after the roadside guy played parts changer instead of mechanic.
