This probably is a very stupid question but I just have to ask.
Everyone has probably seen the movie Black Dog or heard about it. Ive always wondered is there really such a thing as the black dog? Or is it just a myth.....

I've had people ask me before. Not all movies are based on true stories. Neither was black dog. It was a good movie, I liked it.
Sadly, if a driver is driving while extremely tired, the only thing he may see is the inside of his own eye lids. Whether he is able to open them after he crashes, is up to a higher power.UGA79 Thanks this. -
I figured it was another one of Hollywoods made up beasts.....
Thanks for replying so quick, ya'll got some interesting stories on here -
It's more of a legend as far as I know. You do start seeing things, I do anyway. It's not always a black dog though. I've seen a huge red fox, a coyote or pack of them, and once all the telephone poles jumped up and ran right across the road in front of me. I saw that last one clear as day and when I blinked and looked closer they were all right where they'd run to.
blacklabel, NewNashGuy, Joetro and 2 others Thank this. -
i've heard some talk that said if u push to hard and ur running off the caffine pills for to long, guys have actually seen a black dog....along with other types of animals....like some druggies i know have seen a purple elephant. so who knows, I know before i had my cdl i'd drive from florida to mass in 20 hours after staying up all night partying (i know stupid) and i've seen stuff out the corner of my eye in the middle of the night and thats when i knew it was time to stop in (and no i dont do that anymore, younger and dumber)

I know there was at least one thread about this some time ago, and I think there are others. Unfortunately, I don't have the time right now to really do a complete search. But there are some interesting answers here, too:

Of the posts I've seen where somebody reportedly has seen a 'black dog', they also report using chemical stimulants. In that case, it is a halucination caused by some sort of drug or chemical stimulant. Like drunks seeing pink elephants.
GAPrincess Thanks this. -
I've been drunk more times than I care to count, and I've still yet to see a pink elephant.
Likewise, I've driven beyond my FMCSA limit many times and have never seen anything other than the lines on the road swerving. It sure wasn't me swerving, by God.
FWIW, once those lines start swerving, I pull over and get some sleep.
panhandlepat and kickin chicken Thank this. -
When I used to run heavy and hard hauling iron I could swear that gremlins were messing with the truck...

I saw a white line moving around on the highway, on a very dark, late night. Wasn't me though, luckily I managed to miss the SKUNK.
