It’s a 2000 volvo with a Rockwell 10 speed/Detroit motor. Tranny is a 6 month old reman. Today at a stop light the truck would go into gear but wouldn’t move. Nothing. Zippo. After 10 mins the truck would go into gear. Then after sitting for a couple hours the truck wouldn’t go into any gear - running or not. Slowing letting off the clutch while trying to put it in gear resulted in a grinding sound. There is free play/clutch feels normal. Another hour later the shifter would go into gear! HOWEVER no high range. Switching the shift lever does nothing, no usual sounds of it switching, no hi gears/hi reverse, etc.

Ok guys what could it be?! I’m puzzled. Thanks for any and all replies!!!

Will you explain that a little better?
Clutch appears to be normal you said.
Does the gear shift lever move into all positions and feel normal but the truck does not move sometimes?
With the air pressure up and the engine off can you hear the air range piston try to shift with the air control, shift lever in neutral?
Distinguish if you are moving the gear shift lever or air control.

Sounds like the range gears are stuck in between. I’ve had that happen before when upshifting from low to high. Clutching it and flipping the range selector a few times will usually remedy it. Can you hear it switching from low to high with the truck off?

cant hear the air selector moving. I’m thinking that’s the issue.

first must be check the air pressure on both ports on air module. go to eaton fuller's web site and find troubleshooting manual for your transmission.

check the filter on the back of the transmission. looks like a little black coolie hat. there is a sintered metal filter similar to the one on a Rochester carb in there. you only need a 1-2psi drop in inlet pressure to the shift solenoid before you can start to have problems.

He was talking about the fuel filter in an old Rochester carburetor being similar to the filter in the transmission.

I was just alluding to the fact that if he knew Rochesters had a brass filter, he was old like me.
