Can anyone tell me about the DOT Physical and Beta Blockers? I take Metoprolol and Flecanide for supraventricular tachycardia caused by an extra electrical pathway in my heart.

Basically, my heart rate rises to 150 to 200 beats per minute on occasions. Some from very high physical activity such as running full sprint for a long distance or from too much cafine.

I am concerned because I will be going to get my DOT Physical soon and my CDL.

    Can anyone ease my nerves?:biggrin_25511:

I hope this isnt a bad sign,.... not one response yet. I'm getting nervous because I really havent seen any comments from anyone as it pertains to heart related issues. This could mean that no one that is a driver has heart problems or they simply dont allow anyone with a heart condition to drive.

Now mine really is not a bad thing, it is rather common. The only diff with me is that I take medication to control mine.

Hope to hear from someone to ease my mind a bit.

Hey, I am a nurse turned truck driver student. I have a pacemaker for slow heartrate. A few years later my heartrate decided to increase so now I take medication to keep my heartrate "normal". I don't take beta blockers I take a calcium channel blocker. I passed my DOT physical but because of the pacemaker (which still functions a % of the time) I have to have DOT phsyicals every year. Beta blockers are the drug of choice for tachy but there are others.

AS long as your regular doctor or heart doctor says OK to work then you should be fine.
If you have a slip from that doctor to show at the time of your DOT physical, things will go much smoother.

Just explain your medications and the why's and what for's and you should be fine.

Thats. I did take my DOT Physical last week and passed it. I only got a one year due to something that the DOT book said but I should get a two year providing everything is OK with this year.

I started class this week and so far so good. Might have to do a post at some point with my "trials and tribulations". Had two tests already. We are on Air Brakes now,........ cant wait to get done and get out there.

Congratulations on passing your physical. I'm sorry I haven't been on this board in a while or I could have given you an answer. Anyway, let me assure you that there are a lot of drivers out there with heart problems. The sad thing is that most of them don't know it yet.

I myself have had coronary artery bypass surgery, atrial fibrillation with sick sinus syndrome, Bradycardia, Tachycardia and AV heart block. I also now have a pacemaker and I've met all the DOT criteria to return to work. It's just from here on out I get a DOT physical every year.

Beta blockers and the supraventricular tachycardia drugs are not a problem. They are the reason you received a 1 year physical.

I doubt you will have a problem with the 150 to 200 beats driving a truck. You will have more problem with the blood pressure issues with the beta blockers. Keep it in the guidelines and you will have no problems. You will however receive a one year physical.

Yes, my issue is caused by an extra electrical pathway in my heart. I think I mentioned that I had to have a release when I got my DOT physical.

Anyway, my Doctor said that Beta-blockers are used to treat high blood pressure in some cases so, as far as the blood pressure issue I dont think this will be an issue. During my physical, it was 117 over 76.

The other thing the beta blocker does is stop high doses of adrenilin from going to my heart if I am doing something strenuous or if I become excited.

My Doctor told me not to be too concerned, there are millions of people who have the same problem I have,..... they just dont know it. It just stinks because I have to take this medicine and I have to get a yearly physical. :biggrin_2558:
