Hi, guys I just signed up for the site and have been reading around but had a few questions I was hoping ya fellas could help me with. I'm from Miami, FL and a welder/fabricator/mechanic currently working and living near salt lake city, Utah. My regular drivers license, vehicle registration and home address are all in FL. But i'm interested in getting my CDL while here in salt lake. My first question is would it be better to just pay for the training course up front my self and obtain the cdl directly from the DMV or join a company? I do have some money set aside for this but have been baffled by the variation in costs. How much ball park would just the training by it self cost up front? In miami there were schools offering 40hrs of training and the certificate for $1,500 dollars, in salt lake the few places i called want as much as $6,000+. Most of which seem to be hiring companies.
Also if i get the certificate of training here in Utah could i take it home to FL to apply for the cdl at the dmv there or would i have to loose the FL license, re register /transfer my vehicle to Utah? reason i ask is because i'm interested in OTR driving and don't intend to have a home base or become a UT resident. It would be much easier and cost effective to keep my vehicle registration and home address in FL.
would greatly appreciate any and all input!
Best way to obtain CDL in salt lake, utah???

Go to roadmaster i think i seen them there

I think before you do anything contact Florida dmv speak to a supervisor and get advice from them. I would hate for you to get advice from here and it not be accurate. Not that someone would intentionally miss informyou, but they might not have all the facts

I do agree with what bad-luck said, contact FLA first. But if you do get your license here in Utah, I would say to Salt Lake Community College, or, in Lehi, there is Mountainland Applied Technical College. I went to Road Master up on the 201, and hind sight being 20/20 I think I would have been far better off going to a Tech College. This of course is only my opinion, There are going to be other opinions without a doubt. There is a Sage driver training in Salt Lake as well.

Community college is much cheaper and just as good as a private CDL school.
Having a Miami, FL address will really limit the companies that will hire you. -
Roadmaster will talk about how awesome Werner is for giving them a free truck to use.
Snowshoes Thanks this. -
