Hey I have a 2011 Galaxy DX959 radio with an astatic mic on it. I'm curious about what I can get to get the best range and clarity out of it. It will be running in a 2012+ rig. This galaxy is my baby in a sense because it was given to me by someone important to me. But I have always had a facination with the galaxy since I was a kid and my grandfather (who would only run galaxys) keyed up his in his old bronco and could literally disrupt the signal to the TV in the house. I don't need it that powerful just enough to get max range and something to kill the background noise and static. Also just as a fun toy a togglable echo so I can kick echo on and off because I know it pisses some people off.
Best setup for galaxy 959 for distance

Galxy 959 dont come with echo unless installed aftermarket but what exact truck are you running?Antenna is most important then coax.Best antennas for big trucks are predator 10k,monkey made, davemade if you can find one, fatboy, etc or you can run a standard wilson 2000,good but not as good as ones previous mentioned.

959's aren't that strong I think only 3-4 watts, so your definitely gunna want to get a peak and tune and some sort of kicker. You can get a echo board installed and they normally are pretty good.
But those 959s aren't a very big radio. Very nice radios just not a lot of power.
I also second the antenna comment. The antenna is more important then the radio. Those center loaded monkey mades are really nice antennas. -

I have one of these radios and they are a bit anemic right out of the box. The best thing you can do is go to cbtricks.com and download the alignment instructions and have a real shop follow them to the letter. If you do this and make sure they don't do any bs mods, the radio will sound like a million bucks WITH the modulation limiter intact. I have the proof right here in my truck. People think it sounds like a base station and it still has a 4 watt dead key for better range and swings about 32 watts PEP. Setting the driver bias and final bias current correctly makes it sound great.

Your Grandfather had export radios, big difference from the DX (what a joke) 959.

Keying up the radio and disrupting the TV in the house is usually caused by a dirty radio. I used to do the same thing with my Magnum S45HP......barefoot I could pause the DVR player, make the picture break up and piss off the wife....hee hee hee.
Getting max range from your Galaxy means the best antenna you can get. If going on an F150 I recommend a 108 whip from MFJ. If going on a Semi I recommend a Sirio 5000. -
But I he had once told me about an older DX959 he ran in his peterbuilt called a Galaxy 959 flamethrower. It's the only thing he ever ran in his rig and it's also the only radio he never worked on himselfTheSpecialist Thanks this. -
Dont expect great results with a factory antenna system. First thing, is to run quality coax, and a good antenna, as others here have mentioned. Once you get your truck, ask the forum what antenna will work best for your truck. Some antennas will work great on some trucks, some will not, just depends on the truck.
Find a quality tech to properly align and tune your radio. Not a truckstop hack. The galaxy 959's can be a fine sounding radio if they're put in the right hands. That static issue can be resolved as well for the most part, by a tech with the right equipment.
If you want more power, by a small 2-pill amp, and have the tech set up your radio for it. Its not necessary, but nothing wrong with haveing a little extra kick when you need it. But dont get hung up on wattage. A clean, properly tuned stock radio, with a good bit of work into your antenna, will out talk a dirty, hacked 100 watt radio, with a poor antenna system.
If you want echo, look into an echo mic. Rf limited x-treme 2018's sound good, but area bit pricey imo. The cheaper, superstar dm 452's also sound pretty good. This way, no holes have to be drilled, or anything added to the radio.slim6596, TheSpecialist and darthanubis Thank this. -
If you want more range out of the radio you have, first get yourself a good, tall antenna and get it tuned properly, then look into getting a kicker...When it comes to Amp's, you don't really have to go crazy and spend a ton of money on one, start out with one that does a couple hundred watts...(Texas Star 250, or 350, or whatever brand you want that does around 200w's) You will be surprised just how far you can talk on 200w's...Plus, most Amp's this size can easily be ran without having to up-grade your electrical system...mike5511 Thanks this.
