Depending on weather/road conditions, going through Gallup and Shiprock on Hwy 491 might be the better choice.

It's a nice drive. When the snow gets up in the mountains, you need to be careful between dusk and daylight. Lots of elk come down towards the highway around the Continental Divide on 550, and especially between Cortez and Monticello.

buzzarddriver, Old_n_gray and Oxbow Thank this.

Stay off US 6 over Soldier Pass if weather’s no good in winter. Pretty good cell phone blackout through there as well.
