    Hi all,

I just got my CLP on my own. I live in Plano, TX. I am not going down the paid CDL training route. I want to pay for my own CDL training and then try to find a driving job locally. The issue I have with paid CDL schools is that they really are not free and are more expensive considering the low pay and contractual agreement. I have looked at many CDL schools in the area and I am not impressed. Most of these schools are used by mega-carriers to train their to be drivers as well. Almost all of them are similarly priced some closer to where I live and others further away.

The issue I have with all of them is the limited amount of time you get behind the wheel. For a 3-week school, you average about 20-30 minutes of driving time a day. That is not much for someone who has never driven a truck.

Then there is the route of these truck rental places which honestly will give you about the same amount of driving time for about 1/4 of the price. But in talking to them I am not sure if they are trustworthy.

I was hoping there has to be a better option to get trained. I want to get more driving and training time. I am hoping someone here will point me in the right direction. Is there another option that a newbie like me is not aware of? I thank you for your help in advance.

    R. E. West has their own cdl school and it's free and no contract to sign.

Isn't that in TN? I am in Texas. Plus there has to be a catch. Nothing is free in life.

What is the catch? I am not going to dive for them. I want a local job in DFW area.

Well... It is not a local job in DFW so why would they take me to train me then let me come back to Texas to find a local job? It makes no sense. Thus I can only construe this as an advertisement for them.

Plenty of those also. DOT Transportation in Saginaw hires new cdl school grads and reimburses the tuition back to you. Most terminals have local/regional/OTR to choose from.

Calm down; you didn't say you want a local job in your original post, or did I miss that. OK, I missed the local part. Plenty of local jobs around DFW if you attend a 160 hr. cdl school.
