For all you experienced folks, I have a question.

I am in school now (SAGE) and am preparing to go on the road. I have been building a list of things I will need and there are several lists available here and on other boards. What I'd like to know, is where have you found the best place to buy your trucking supplies at a cheap price.

I'm mostly talking about non-household items. I know where to get cheap batteries, clothes, food, etc. But where do you buy, for instance, your gloves, your maps, your inverters and appliances, your tools, etc.

I've gotta think that a truck stop is the most expensive place to obtain these items.

In addition, what can I expect to be already on the truck or otherwise supplied by my company?

You just need to be frugal. Most of the items can be found at Wal Mart. But, you get what you pay for. I would not buy an inverter from Wal Mart. Plus, I don't recall seeing one over 300 Watts. But if the truck has no fridge (which will probably be the case) you can get a plug in cooler cheaper from Wal Mart. Maps...You can check your local book store, but you want a Motor Carriers Atlas and that is most easily found in the truck stops. Even if you plan on using a GPS learn to use an Atlas!! Tools, I would go for Sears Craftsman. Good tools, guaranteed. If you need a CB find a good CB shop near you. Usually around the truck stops, or in them, but go to a CB shop for that.

As far as what is supplied by the company.... nothing really. Not for you. They pretty much leave them stripped down except for the safety equipment. Oh, and a mattress, but the rest is up to you.

As ar as the MC Atlas goes, I just picked up the 2009 version straight from the Rand McNaly online store. They had 'em on sale for $39.95, (I think it was....hang on, lemme check the receipt.....yup, that was it.) Plus $6.95 for shipping.

They have 'em on Amazon as well, even used ones on the cheap.

I hadn't thought about the Rand McNaly store. I did see the MC Atlas on Amazon and they had a listing for the 2010 version but it was not yet available. They give you the option to pre-purchase and get it when it goes to print (I think at a discount).

I'm going to need mine pretty soon but I'd hate to buy the 2009 version right before the 2010 comes out. Does anyone know what time of year the next version becomes available?

Candun, the coleman 12v cooler works very well. It is about $100 at truckstops and $75 at Wally World. Stay away from some of the other coolers the truckstops sell that are offbrands......... they don't last. If your company doesn't have a 'fridge get the cooler. Keeping ice in a chest is both expensive and aggravating. On the mapbook....wait until the new maps come out if you can.......then buy last years at a fraction. Gps is great but keep in mind........it's not always accurate. If you put in an invertor put in the biggest you can....and then small appliances can be 110v instead of 12v. They will last longer because they use less current at the higher voltage. And they generally just work better. Craftsman are good tools and can be bought a Kmart....also Cobalt at Lowes have a lifetime warranty. If you like to keep your house tidy.....look at the 1 gallon shopvac.....small,powerful, and 110v

On the contrary... the Coleman cooler is a p.o.s. The Kool Mate by Igloo is better and will last longer. It's about the same price too. There's a reason you see the motor kit for the Coleman's for sale in most truck stops ;).

Edit: It seems that nobody has the Igloo cooler in stock. Ack! I hope I can find one....

I could never do that. It takes me 20 minutes to clean a hotel room before I move my stuff in as it is. lol

As for finding truck stuff, if you google the term "go truck stop", I bet that you can find a lot of cool stuff for MOSTLY reasonable prices.

That's funny....... I originally bought a Kool Mate. Replaced the motor twice in 6 months. When it quit the third time it's new home was the dumpster and I bought the Coleman. That was over 2 years ago. It still works.

The best place to buy CBs is at the truckstop. You will hear about them being sold from a driver, brand new in the box, for a fraction of the retail.

The best place to buy flatbed equipment, GPS devices, or any electronics (like TVs) is online. Cant touch the prices in a retail store.
