Hey y'all I was wondering what pays best when it comes to hauling a dry van or reefer.
Is it long haul, short haul. Dedicated, regional otr? Is it a specific product say seafood or etc?
Can one stay west of the Mississippi and make good money? Maybe even just run the west coast?
Thanks in advance.
Also are there any independent tanker O/O?
Best paying freight, dryvan/reefer?

The best pay I've heard, is grocery store drivers. Next would be tanker yanker, always a shortage of suicide jockies, coming in 3rd, would be flatbed, and the bottom of the barrel are van/reefer, with some exceptions. There are some fantastic opportunities for van/reefer, gravy, in fact, but as a new driver, you won't see them. Tanker takes experience, flatbed is too much work for many, so van/reefer has become the catch-all for new drivers, and pay is average. Again, the money in trucking is specialized, and those drivers never give them up, and if they do, the jobs go to the next in line, who has been waiting patiently for 7 years now. Regardless of what is told, generally, a new driver out of school can expect maybe $50-$60gs, but will have to work for it. While life on the road eliminates some hassles, like rent, it's a pixx poor life, so much more to life than looking out a windshield. I say, local, or regional is the ticket. You can go home at the end of the day.

Google D.A.T national Van,Reefer, Flatbed rates. It’s not a secret. That is the average for most spot market rates. That is the number you want to beat.

Everything varies day to day and year to year. Currently, the Freight market is down slowly getting better but who knows when exactly? Supply & Demand will determine all of what is asked. Too much trucks still so Freight is down both with Dry van and Reefer. I believe on gauging things by a basic look around even from truck stops. Is a truck stop packed at 2 pm in the afternoon (not a good sign for Freight rates if it is), how much Reefer units are running in those Truck stops? (Another indication of who might be loaded or waiting oppose to who isn't). Compactly is one of the biggest things many overlook.
Another way of determining what pays more is understanding contract freight oppose a load board is the best thing these days. We aren't waiting for a recession, it's been here for a long minute now.CruzControhl2 and bamanation Thank this. -
